Uploading is very slow and stops me from browsing while doing so

Whenever I try to upload large files it takes forever to complete, but also while doing so, it basically stops me from using the internet, for whatever reason, altogether.

Is this normal or do I need to change some settings to remedy this? I don't recall this happening with my previous providers

Case in point, I was at a friend's house earlier when I began the upload my file and it was saying it would take 2 hours. I've just got home to continue but now it's saying it's going to be over double that time now
