Internet dropping - related to Google Nest?

Hello Community,

I wonder if you can help troubleshoot. I have TT's Fibre 150 contract but, due to poor WiFi coverage, started using the Google Nest mesh. I have the hub located next to the TT modem, and then two additional Google Nest points elsewhere in the house.

Unfortunately the internet drops periodically. Sometimes it will be once a week, other times once a day. It might be for 30 mins or for 6 hours. There doesn't seem to be any pattern or consistency.

I recently had an engineer visit who checked everything over, replaced the socket and the modem but ultimately didn't know what was causing the problem.

I'm not technically minded, but I suspect that it might be something to do with Google Nest.

Any suggestions would be very welcome!

Morning,

Can I just confirm, do any wired devices remain stable when this happens? @KeithFrench - would you be able to offer any additional advice in regards to the wireless connection please?

Thanks

Hi @timandanoushka

@Anonymous has asked me to help you with your Wireless reception problems. Whilst I cannot provide any direct support for Google Nest, hopefully, I can point you in the right direction, but I will need to confirm something first. What make/model of TalkTalk router do you have or have you disconnected this, just leaving the Openreach modem connected directly to the Mesh?

Slow speed, intermittent dropouts, breaks in the signal or no signal on some or all devices or no internet access might be caused by Wi-Fi interference from other local networks, which can also lead to a permanent reduction in speed. No ISP can be responsible for your local environment, this is mainly a by-product of the popularity of Wi-Fi.

However, other factors should be investigated first. Do you have any wired connections & if so, how do they perform?

Generally speaking, the 2.4GHz band suffers much more from interference than the 5GHz band, but the 2.4GHz one can sometimes have a better range, but this all depends on your local area.

The next stage involves sending out a guide to you to help you get me some important diagnostic results so that I can analyse them for you and recommend changes to your router configuration to solve them.

I only send this out to people who request it.

Hi Keith - thanks, I have disconnected the TT router and have directly connected the Openreach modem to the mesh.

I don't have any wired devices, so unfortunately can't comment on that.

It sounds as though your guide would be very helpful!

OK, thanks for that. I will PM you a link for a guide of mine on Wi-Fi interference & initially look at the section called "Are you suffering from interference – prove it first". This section includes full details of Wi-Fi analysers that I recommend for Windows, Windows phone, Android and Apple operating systems. However, I have no way of testing the Apple product. Do not worry about interpreting the results, I will do that for you.

Please post the screenshots that I have requested in my guide (no photos please they can be difficult to read as text can get out of focus when zoomed in), from the analyser you are using (also in my attached guide). Please ensure that the analyser window is maximised (if Windows) before taking the screenshots & upload them via the "Insert Photos" button (in a mobile browser it's the picture icon) on the post editor's toolbar with the Size parameter set to Large. If they are too small, I will not be able to read them & although I can enlarge them, this puts the text out of focus. If you prefer PM them to me. If you do PM me, then please add a link in there to this thread, so that I can find it easily.

Hi Keith,

No, when I sent the AP view picture I just had the TalkTalk view selected. Though, on reflection, I don't know if that was the right network because I use the Google mesh - which is all of the 'Warlow WiFi' and 'Warlow Guest' networks shown on the earlier image. So perhaps I'll have to re-do it for those. I'm a bit lost!

Most of the networks are mine:

[Room] Speaker - these are all of the various google speakers I have throughout the house

Warlow WiFi and Warlow Guest are mine, per the Google mesh

Hall Wifi and Landing Wifi are the mesh extenders

'Hidden', and all of the Sky/BT networks are not mine.

Thanks
