I have received a new router and so far so good. It seems much more stable than the last replacement, which was a tiny bit glitchy from the start and kept dropping connection.

Two faulty routers

At the end of July I had an issue where I could get wired connection to my router, but no wireless. I could see the router, but it wouldn't connect.

When I reset my router I lost everything, wired and wireless. After two weeks of it not resolving itself (I was on holiday at the time), I was sent a new router and all seemed fine.

However, less than a month later the same thing has happened. TalkTalk sent an OpenReach engineer and he said everything is fine coming into the house, but he confirmed the router is dead again. Now this could well be coincidence, but I am surprised they have both broken.

I live in an old Farmhouse, so need access points around the house, otherwise I get no internet. Therefore, I have four ASUS routers dotted around the house, all in AP mode.

One is connected via a long run of ethernet cable. This is then is connected to a Netgear switch and this has another ethernet cable going to the next router.

Another is connected from a separate Netgear switch in another room, the final router is connected via a Powerline.

I have quite a few devices attached to the routers, but I wouldn't say more than 10 devices per router (multiple Firesticks, A/V receivers, phones, laptops etc...).

Surely, this wouldn't be damaging the router? Could they in any way damage the TalkTalk router, for example they are faulty and causing it to glitch?

No, it wouldn't damage the router, but all these APs could well be causing WiFi interference with each other. Unless your electricity supply is dodgy of course, that might.

Slow speed, intermittent dropouts, breaks in the signal, no signal on some or all devices or no internet access might be caused by Wi-Fi interference from other local networks, which can also lead to a permanent reduction in speed. No ISP can be responsible for your local environment, this is mainly a byproduct of the popularity of Wi-Fi.

Generally speaking, the 2.4GHz band suffers much more from interference than the 5GHz band, but the 2.4GHz one can sometimes have a better range, but this all depends on your local area.

If you would like me to help you, please can you specify the make/model of TalkTalk router that you are using?

I'm sorry to hear this.

Have we sent you another router?

Thanks. I have the TalkTalk Wifi Hub (the one with the single light on the front).

I have been sent a new router and should get it by tomorrow. I am concerned it will die again.

Hi NM213

I can't see any reason why the routers are failing.

If you do experience this issue again then please post back on this thread to let us know.

Thanks
