Maybe not "dug up" unless cost-effective to do so, but copper is a valuable commodity and easily recycled so I am sure Openreach will try to salvage as much of it as they can.

Fun fact: around 80% of the copper ever mined is still in use today.

I was reading an article by Openreach (https://www.openreach.com/news/openreach-trials-service-methods-to-support-analogue-network-retirement/) wondering how the copper switch-off will affect those of us using ADSL modems to connect with the street cabinet. Presumably the switch-off will occur at the exchange? I can't imagine that the copper lines in the ground (in our case) will be dug up!

Hi Rich,

The plan is to switch to FTTP, fibre to the premises, so the copper cable from the street cabinet to your home would be replaced with optical fibre

Sorry, I misunderstood your question (and couldn't open your link), Yes, as ferguson says, I can't imagine that they would dig it up unless it's cost effective which in this case I'm sure it wouldn't be

Thanks @Chris-TalkTalk so that means all the ADSL modems will require replacement. This doesn't get a mention in the articles I've read.

I expect some modems will accept both copper and optical inputs though? I have a TT modem and I'm on Fibre65.

These units are combined modems and routers. Modems will become redundant as Fibre to the premises is delivered directly to an ONT (Optical Network Terminal). This is turn connects to your router via the WAN port. Most recent TalkTalk Hubs are compatible. But they will usually send out new equipment in any event.
