Open a terminal window (on a Apple/Windows device on your LAN) and enter the command:

<LI-CODE lang="markup">arp -a</LI-CODE>

This will list all devices on your local network. You will see both IP addresses and MAC addresses tabulated.

Or, look through your router settings (if you can log into that) and find its list of devices to which it has assigned IPs.
(These two lists could differ if you have any devices with manually configured IPs)

Hi,

I have a Swann NVR CCTV system connected to my router.

The Swann company tells me it’s online.

I bought the system as an Amazon return supposedly “unused” however the previous owner must have tried it out and set up a password.

I can’t use the system, because I can’t log in.

To enable me to change the password I require the units I.P. address from my router so that I can obtain it’s MAC address.

It doesn’t show on my screen showing devices connected to the router.

All my other devices are shown.

I feel it’s something to do with the router settings somehow?

I’m not too computer savvy on the technical side, so please could you bear that in mind with any suggestions you may have.

I'm sure they equally are available on Windows and apple. Almost always free.

Hi skyblue465,

Just a thought but have you checked to see if the MAC address is on a label on the device. The text on labels is sometimes small a difficult to read so may have been missed

OK thanks. I'm not familiar with the device but is there no way to reset it to factory default settings which would then reset the password to the default?

Yes, but I need a password to log in before I can reset to factory default. I’m stuck in a perpetual circle of dead ends.
I even emailed the original owner for help, as his email came up on on the CCTV monitor screen when I tried to hit “forgotten password” for them to send a new password link. But NO answer 🙄.

That seems really strange, are you sure there is no recessed reset button, they are generally very small a difficult to see? (You would usually have to hold the button in with the end of a pin or paper clip)

Chris

Yes, the first part (arp -a) is what I do already,.. and the Swann unit doesn’t show on the screen. Everything else I have does.
That’s been my problem all along.
Swann themselves can see its connected and online, but only by its serial number.
How would I get into my router settings? That sounds like a good possibility to find the solution.
Many thanks.

I guess you’ve tried stuff described at https://support.swann.com/hc/en-us/articles/4803164199577-7450-8580-Camera-Configuration

it mentions a config tool that sounds like it might scan your LAN for the Swann box.

Your device could be configured with a Static IP fixed in its settings. Your router then won’t be able to list it as having been discovered by DHCP like your other devices.

You could try pinging the broadcast address (e.g. 192.168.1.255 for a 192.168.1.0 LAN) to wake up all devices on your LAN. Then doing an arp -a again. If the device is on that subnet and responds to ping, then it will appear in the arp cache. Boom.

However, if it’s statically configured for another static subnet, your search for its IP might be harder yet!
