Not 100% sure on this but as far as I am aware SAMBA is not supported on Android, you may need to download an app.

I have an old HG633 router and a USB connected drive however Windows 10 and 11 updates around 6 months ago stopped all access as the older SAMBA protocols are no longer secure.

Community Star @KeithFrench may be able to advise further when he has a moment.

Many thanks.

I don't know much about networks so any help would be great.

Do I need to assign a IP address to the drive so that the android file manager can find it?

That's what it feels like, but I am just guessing.

You need to install an app on the tablet, such as CX File Explorer, which doesn't pester you with ads

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cxinventor.file.explorer

More options: https://tehnoblog.org/es-file-explorer-manager-alternatives/

Hi @Confused9

The HG635 router only supports SAMBA or SMB V1, which as @martswain has pointed out is no longer secure. The guidance from Microsoft is never to use it, so don't, that would also be my recommendation. No current TalkTalk router allows connection of an external HDD in this manner anymore due to its insecurity.

A NAS or connecting this drive to a PC & create a share on it is the best way to go these days.
