Constant Ping spikes

Hi this is a problem that has only started happening recently, my latency when gaming is jumping from 24 to 100+ regulary. I have tried everything possible, resetting the router, splitting wifi bands but nothing is working, i also pay around £25 a month for 40mbps when i can get 150mbps on virgin, if this persists i will be switching.
