SAGEMCOM FAST 5364 - can't change Primary DNS address to use local Pi-Hole DNS filter

I've only just noticed that my DCHP information given out to my equipment has changed. I'm running firmware SG4K100206 and I was previously able to set my Primary DNS server to be on my local network i.e. 192.168.1.3. I run a Pi-Hole DNS filter at this address. I'm now no longer able to do this. It looks like I'm only able to set primary DNS to 79.79.79.79 & Secondary DNS to 79.79.79.80. If I blank out the fields then 192.168.1.1 will set as my Primary DNS server.

How do I make 192.168.1.3 my Primary DNS address now?

The DNS servers of 79.79.79.79 etc are the TalkTalk default DNS servers. If you want to use a different DNS server on your local subnet, rather than the router of 192.168.1.1, this is done from the Advanced mode. Go to:-

Dashboard > See Wi-Fi Settings > Manage Advanced Settings > TalkTalk Wi-Fi Hub > DNS

I haven't tried using a different local DNS server, but it should work if you set this to 192.168.1.3. It will then be handed out to your clients via DHCP.

I tried this. I changed the primary DNS server to 192.168.1.3, clicked the 'Apply' button, after which I got a pop-up message in red saying -

'Operation could not complete. Something went wrong'. Then press the cancel button and you're kicked out of your router, wanting you to log in again.

Either there's some reason the router won't allow this, or there's a problem with this firmware.

What I do not have access to is an actual DNS server on my local network, so cannot prove if it works as a DNS Cache or not.

No, it just worked. The error that you got though has been seen before in other parts of the UI, typically with the 5364 running V3 hardware, so that might be the issue. I cannot replicate that as I have the 5464.

You should not be specifying a public DNS server at that point, whilst it is allowed it renders the DNS process inefficient. Just delete the 79.79.79.80 entry. However, I do not know if this will work as you have hardware revision V3?

Did you ever try the factory reset of the 5364?

Whilst you are obviously allowed to run your own DNS server, do you need anything over & above that which is already provided within the router's DNS server?

Dashboard > See internet settings > Manage advanced settings > TalkTalk Wi-Fi Hub > Maintenance > Resets

Then click the Reset button next to "Factory Settings".

Hello,

I've followed your steps and now I have a big problem. The router has been reset but now I can't log in as the 'admin' user. The password on the back of the router, on the card, doesn't work; my old 'pre-reset' password doesn't work and none of the existing WiFi SSIDs I set up have changed.

I've also performed the reset procedure by following the Talktalk instructional video - pressing and holding in the reset button on the back on the router for 30 seconds, after turning the router on. Unfortunately I get the same result as the software reset above.

I can't access or control my router now. I think I need a replacement. Please can somebody help?

Good news! Replacement router connected and seeing the internet. Set up my specifically names SSIDs, changed the router admin password and changed the default DNS ip address to be given out by DHCP. All good - no errors.

It's working as it should. I'll return the old router this week.
