Unfortunately I have had to move the router to the hallway next to the master socket and now rely on Wi-Fi so cannot connect via ethernet anymore, (this was how I had it until a problem came up and Openreach got involved and I did not want them blaming internal wiring).

It was fine until a few days ago, and all the other devices I have are still OK with above 40 Mbps in the same room as the PC.

The download speed shown at the router (TalkTalk) is 47 Mbps, Ipads and Android phones are showing speeds of around 43 Mbps, but my PC is now around 7 Mbps

This only started several days ago, it was also in the 40 Mbps range, and nothing has changed on the PC. so far as I know.

Thinking that I was doing the right thing, because the signal was only at 1 bar, I have purchased and installed a tp-link WiFi adapter, (AX1800 or Archer TX20E), and downloaded and installed the latest drivers for it.

I've switched off the onboard WiFi, and switched on the tp-link.

The onboard WiFi has had a 1 bar signal and about 7 Mbps, the new tp-link has 3 bars and about the same Mbps as onboard WiFi

Something else is definitely going on.

The new tp-link seems to be working at 2.4Ghz and the onboard is 5Ghz

The "network" tab in Taskmamager show 0% when I am not actively downloading, otherwise starting up a new YouTube or something shows Brave to be around 4 Mbps

Now I'm stumped....

Any help would be great, thank you.

Hi @Qwghlm is it possible for you to connect by ethernet and see what speeds you see?

It would also be worth rebooting the router and powering down the pc.

Please let us know how you get on.

Hi, wish I lived nearby I have a very long ethernet cable, gets me no end of earache if I use it, but it helps with situations like this.

Did you try the router and computer reboot? I'm guessing win 11 by the way?

Sorry talking you into spending money, but it's a nice to have.

How about installing the WiFi drivers and trying letting windows find new versions. Sorry if I'm trying to reach mum to suck eggs, but my next personal suggestion for me alone would be s*d it I wanted a nice new toy. How old is your pc?

Well,

The box states the tp-link I bought is an "AX 1800" in great big bold letters, so that's the driver I used from their website.

Looking at the tiny label on the side it states TX20E(UN) V1.0 on the side along with it's S/N number

And now I've searched for the TX20E driver, it's different to the AX1800 driver, and this one connects at 5GHz and the download speed is now back up to 40 plus Mbps.

So thanks tp-link for making it so obvious by having AX1800 in huge bold letters on the front of the box, when in fact it's a TX20E(UN) as shown in tiny writing on a label on the side of the box...
