TPlink Deco x50 DSL problem with setup

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a TP-Link Deco X50-DSL and have been trying to set it up as a DSL modem router using the configuration guide from TP-Link’s website. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to establish an internet connection.

I was advised to first confirm with TalkTalk whether my connection type is Dynamic IP and if the required VLAN ID is 101. Can someone from TalkTalk confirm this for me?

Additionally, I would really appreciate any help in configuring the Deco X50-DSL as a standalone DSL modem, directly connected to my phone line, without needing to bridge it through the TalkTalk modem.

Has anyone successfully set up this device with TalkTalk, or can TalkTalk support provide guidance on the correct settings?

Hi @Arekp many times successfully. Try simply connecting the new router to the wall and not using the TT kit at all. I'm afraid I don't know the settings for every router out there but it is virtually impossible to "brick" a router. The reset button is your friend.

Well, I must say, “many times successfully” doesn’t seem to apply to me! Your advice, while undoubtedly well-intentioned, has proven about as useful as a chocolate teapot. Looks like I’ll be engaging in the time-honored tradition of spending 2-3 delightful hours on the phone with TalkTalk support instead. Wish me luck—I may emerge wiser, or just slightly more broken.

I’ll keep you posted… if I survive.

Hey, I’m not badmouthing anyone! I just wanted to say, half-jokingly, that I tried but gave up and will have to call TalkTalk’s helpline. Unfortunately, I have unpleasant experiences with automated systems that try to assist before connecting you to a real person. 😳

Hi @Arekp sorry that didn't work. Time to get a bit more specific.

You are posting in the fibre section, is your connection actually full fibre? Is the box on the wall ONT or old style phone jack.

Have you been able to access the TP-Link Deco X50-DSL gui?

A couple of screenshots would help if possible.

Yes, I have access to the GUI and I’m sending a photo of the wall socket. It looks like a standard telephone socket. Between the Sagem router and the socket, I also have a white modem from TalkTalk. I have fiber 150

In the end, I can’t do much in the settings because the installation runs automatically. There are two options: I can start the setup as ADSL or VDSL, but I don’t have many choices at the beginning of the DECO installation process. I’m starting to think that someone from TalkTalk’s technical team needs to manually approve my new modem on the network remotely. Is that possible?

Hi A I don't want to intrude into your working day, but I've never heard of TT needing to authorise a new router.

Once we look into advanced settings in the gui we should be able to sort it.

I've asked @chris_talk_talk to cast his eye over this for us.

Hi @Arekp thanks for those. First thing to say is that TT do not currently support ipv6 so we can discount the first two shots.

The third shot is interesting and I think from the time stamp out of order?

Does the SSId ggggggg correspond to something you created?

Yeah, GG GG is just a temporary network I set up—nothing too mysterious!

As for work… well, you probably still remember how it was. I envy you for being retired! In 10 years, there probably won’t be any pensions left, and I’ll have to keep working until the end of my life… and one day longer! Because let’s be honest, soon there won’t be anyone left willing to work and pay for my retirement. Haha!

Unfortunately, we’re still looking for a solution. At the moment, I’ve built my own network based on this modem, but unfortunately, through the TalkTalk bridge. That small modem between the TalkTalk Sagem router and the wall cable is acting as a bridge, so essentially, nothing has changed—I still have the same problem. I haven’t eliminated the small TalkTalk modem, and instead of the Sagem router, I now have a Deco. It’s fine because it provides better WiFi, but that’s not what I wanted. I wanted to connect the cable directly to the TP-Link router.

So I’m still waiting for some help and a concrete solution.

When you plug the deco directly into the wall and follow the app instructions, is that when you finally get the no internet connection message.?
