Full fibre 500 keeps dropping to 90mb

I have recently upgraded to Full Fibre 500. I have the eero router and I have run a 20 metre Cat 6 ethernet from the router to my spare room to connect to my PC.

I do not use wifi with my PC as the wifi adapter on the PC is not fact enough.

The problem I have is that the download speed on my PC keeps dropping to approx. 90mb. To fix this I have to unplug the ethernet cable from my PC and plug it in again and the download speed is restored to 500mb.

I believe this is a problem with my PC and not the full firbre service as my phone can still get download speeds of 500mb over wifi.

Has anyone experienced this before? Or have any suggestions on how to get a permanent fix that does not rely on me unplugging the ethernet cable?

Have you tried another Cat 6 cable in case that one is faulty? When the download speed drops to about 90M, have you checked the download speed in the eero app? What happens if you connect the PC directly to the ONT with a known good cable?

I have not tried another cable yet. As I said it is a 20 metre cable and would have to purchase another one to test this.

I could test by connecting to ONT but will have to wait until when no one is using the wifi as I do not know when the problem will occur.

A 20M Cat 6 cable is well within the specifications for your requirements, but like anything else, it could be faulty. What sort of Ethernet adapter are you using - 100M, 1000M or 2.5Gbps? If it's a Windows PC, do you run any security software apart Windows Defender?

It is an Intel 1Gb ethernet adaptor and no to the security software.

Short of something drastic like running a Wireshark trace to find out what is going wrong, I would look to ruling out cable problems first.

So it looks like the fault was my eero router. I tried to restart the router and it never powered on again. TalkTalk provided a replacement as it was under a year old. I did not get round to replacing the cable so still using the original ethernet cable.

I have had the new eero router installed for two days and have not had a problem. Previously the problem happened within a couple of hours.

Hopefully I haven't replied to soon 🤞

My connection is still at 500mb and I have had no problems since replacing the eero router.
