Having upgraded to voip 150, my upload speed is now around 28mb, and the download speed is stuck at just under 100mb. Its rock solid, it just seems to be hitting a ceiling and not getting anywhere 150mb. I have tried resetting the router/hub, no change.

I'd rather solve this on here if possible, 100m is quite fast enough for what I need, and I don't really have the time to waste on automated chat stuff. Its non urgent, I can look at this every couple of days or so.

Jim

Can you connect an Ethernet-connected device in place of the router directly to the ONT & do a speed test from there? Openreach caps the upload to 30Mbps, so you won't get it any faster in that direction

The upload is fine. Its the download that tops out at 90 odd instead of 150. I don't have a long enough cable to go all the way from the point to the computer.

The computer point is a gigabit ethernet, I've checked that in the settings. In anycase, I know the problem is between TalkTalk and the hub because I can get nearly 100m on the phone over wi fi if its close enough to the hub.

Jim

It is a shame that you can't do this, as it would prove the speed coming into your property. Unfortunately, the Hub 2 does not allow you to check for errors on the WAN link, unlike the Hub 3.

What about temporarily moving the Hub next to the ONT & connecting it by a short Ethernet cable. Then put your phone near the router, make sure that it is connected to the 5GHz WiFi band & do a speed test on the phone from there? It is not as foolproof as my previous method, but it should be a guide.

Things to try. Connecting to computer directly to the openreach box? I didn't know that would even work. I don't have enough sockets downstairs, but I think I've got an old double plug somewhere. I'll order a cat6 cable to try, just in case. I can lay it loose up the stairs just to test. That won't get here until next week, so I'll come back when I've got that and done your tests.

Thanks for the help,

Jim

Problem solved! 29.97 up, 149.77 down! Got my cat 6 cable. Now as far as I could tell, cat 5e should have been good enough over the short distance I have. But apparently not. Something about the cat 5e caused the hub to top out at 100Mbs. So there you have it. If you're upgrading to a service over 100, you definitely need cat 6 cables. Its loose laid up the stairs hand rail and taped to the floor until I get time to lay it properly. But I'm the only one in the house so its not a problem.

Talktalk should bring this to peoples attention when supplying new or upgraded services. That short cable they supply with the hubs should be a cat 6, not a 5e.

Thanks all for your help and suggestions.

Jim

I'm glad to hear that your problem is solved and that you've achieved speeds of 29.97 Mbps up and 149.77 Mbps down! It sounds like the upgrade to a Cat 6 cable made a significant difference in your connection speed. You're right; for services over 100 Mbps, using Cat 6 is definitely the way to go.

Your temporary setup with the cable is understandable, especially since you're the only one in the house. It's great that you found a solution that works for you.

Thank you for sharing your experience and feedback about TalkTalk's service. It's important for providers to be aware of these details so they can better inform customers about the necessary equipment for optimal performance.

If you have any more questions or need further assistance in the future, feel free to reach out. Enjoy your improved internet speed.
