topic Internet slow in Fibre

Hi all,

Bit of a quandry with this one. I'm on Fibre 65, with a Huawei HG635 router (which started life as the router I had on conventional broadband). The internet is frequently far slower than the speed I should be getting (guaranteed 43, I think but it's frequently between 10 and 12). An engineer has been out and did a couple of things - basically the connection to the house is OK (as far as Openreach are concerned anyway) but the router itself is a problem (out of date, out of support - the engineer said he was going to mention it in his report). I found that restarting the router will often (but not always) reset the connection back to approx 50, but after a day or so it will drop back down).

A support chat (with what may have been a bot, or a particularly unintelligent AI, since it kept asking me the same questions again and again) had me restart the router, reset the router (back to factory settings) and finally bury it in peat for three months ... er, sorry, got carried away - switch it off completely for 20 minutes .

Result - same as before. Good internet for about a day, then down to broadband speeds. Now and again it will disconnect completely (internet light goes red) then will reset and it comes back, but that doesn't affect the speed (as in, if it is slow, it will stay slow)

Does anyone know any way of getting a stable connection at a reasonable speed (preferably without jumping through the hoops that the customer support chatbots insist on - I'm getting a little old to be doing the same things over and over again while someone else expects a different result)?

Support staff will be back on here from c 8am tomorrow, @Mick21367. Please look out for their reply during the day.

They will need you to be at home to run checks, so do be prepared for more line checks - anyone checking your service has to follow procedure to eliminate causes other than the router first.

They don't just swap out the older routers without checking for other causes first.

Please ignore the above issue for the moment. Support are sending a new router out. Will see if that makes a difference.

Router arrived yesterday, swapping out with the old one was fairly straightforward. Seems to be both faster and more stable than the Huawei router, though there appears to have been a disconnect in the wee small hours (Online duration is less than the time it's been on - that used to happen a lot with the Huawei). Will keep an eye on it over the next few days, but it's looking hopeful so far.
