topic Engineer disappeared after being asked to install ONT in hallway in Full Fibre

Dear helpful minds,

I'm a bit baffled about how to get fibre installed. TT advice was: make sure to have 2 power sockets -- the old router is in such a place and conveniently placed in the hallway. This is where I thought the new fibre would go.

Today, the engineer, late for his appointment, upon being asked to put fibre the same way the copper goes, said he cannot drill through internal walls. I said, if removing the old copper, there would be a hole to the hall... Engineer said they cannot bend the fibre cable. I said, make larger bends, offered drilling a new hole where needed. Then, he: cannot staple cable to the wall but will use unsightly clamps -- me: fine, please use clamps.

The main reason for not wanting it installed where the engineer wanted it (or so I believe, he never showed me a concrete location) is that there's no power nearby, and it's in a corner of the flat, so risking poor coverage elsewhere. Then the engineer left for a call with their manager, and (drumroll) never returned, never answered texts, nada, nothing.

I spent the rest of the day trying to find out what happened -- apparently, the engineer left as 'we did not come to an agreement'. After some frustrating chats with TT and Openreach, I have a new appointment scheduled. I still do not want the router in the corner of the house without any power sockets nearby. I could alternatively suggest a new entry point to the kitchen to use a socket there, but find out in advance if it can be done (according to Openreach and TT chats).

Was wondering if anyone had similar problems.. To get at least the router in the hallway, could I run an ethernet cable (could even install an outlet box) where my old line goes, to connect it there? Or is this detrimental to my signal? Sorry, never installed internet before the router, let alone 'fibre'. But I surely can install a cat 6 cable through a wall...

Hello,

Apologies for the delay. I'm not sure why your post wasn't pulled into our work flow. How are you getting on?

Thanks

Dear Michelle,

Thanks for asking, although the issue was literally last year.

I had to schedule and wait for a second engineer appointment -- again via Openreach with the same subcontractor firm as in the first attempt. Luckily it was not the same engineer who showed up, but someone who had no problem installing the ONT in the hall, where I wanted it to be. It didn't take them long either and it seems to work fine, confirming that engineer number one -- to put it mildly -- talked nonsense.

Thanks for confirming. Apologies I'm not sure why your post didn't come back into us initially but I'm glad to hear that this is now resolved for you.
