Potential upgrade to full fibre

Hi folks.

I am currently on an FTTC connection. Copper from the street cabinet terminates on a master socket in my back bedroom/ office. I am considering upgrading to full fibre, which has been available in our street for a few years. Most of the info I have read seems to indicate that when full fibre is installed, the ONT is normally placed as near as possible to the cable entry point, typically at the front of the premises.

The issue I have is that there is nowhere downstairs suitable for the ONT to be placed. The front of ther house is the kitchen, so ONT would need to be placed under the sink, where mains water supply comes in. I am led to believe that is a non-starter on safety grounds, and anyway there is no nearby mains power. Only other place would be in the hallway, but the only logical place for the ONT would be on a partition wall between hall and kitchen. There is one power socket there, but there is also a radiator, leaving no wall-space.

What I would really want would be to have the ONT upstairs, where the current copper connection terminates. This would involve extensive (about 12 metres potentially) internal fibre to be run from the cable entry up the staircase, across a landing and into the bedroom.

Does anyone know whether (Openreach?) would be prepared to do something like this? Has anyone had an installation involving extensive internal fibre as described above?

OpenReach should discuss with you where the ONT will be placed. Its usual for any cabling to be external to the property with the drilling taking place close to where the ONT will be sited. This is beneficial to you as it it was internal it would probably become your responsibility.

I wanted mine installed at the rear of the property. It comes from a pole in the street to the front of the property, then run round the side to where it enters the property.

Regarding the plug points, I have mine on an extension, as do others, so if you can supply this there should be no issue.

As said, the engineer should accommodate the entry point where you require it. Be firm on the day.

Hope this helps.

like yourself, i wanted fttp and ONT at back of house. openreach came and said they couldn't run fibre inside house for me but i could do it myself!

they gave me 20m reel of fibre which i routed under floorboards from back of house to front of house next to entry point. they came back a week later and connected everything up no problem. ONT at back of house exactly where I wanted. ymmv.
