Could a kind TalkTalk person please turn off my WiFi Optimisation?

The issue of flipping channels has resurfaced since I upgraded from Fibre 75 to Fibre 150 with a new router (obvs). I'd like the channels I select to stick, please.

I'm not too concerned about 2.4GHz, though I resent not having any control over it, but if 5GHz moves away from the lower block of channels I have two devices (including a wifi extender) which can no longer see the 5GHz signal from my router.

None of the current Sagemcom routers has a configuration option for Wi-Fi Optimization. it cannot be disabled.

Our expert has done investigations into Wi-Fi where customers think their problems are caused by Wi-Fi Optimization, virtually all of them have another cause.

Slow speed, intermittent dropouts, breaks in the signal or no signal on some or all devices or no internet access might be caused by Wi-Fi interference from other local networks, which can also lead to a permanent reduction in speed. No ISP can be responsible for your local environment; this is mainly a byproduct of the popularity of Wi-Fi.

Can you please elaborate on the issue you are having with your connection so we can complete diagnostic checks, are you experiencing a dropping connection or slow speeds?

As I just stated, if 5GHz moves away from the lower block of channels I have two devices (including a WiFi extender) which can no longer see the 5GHz signal from my router. The higher channels are not visible to certain devices, including my TP-Link WiFi extender.

PS: speeds are great and signal strength is great, thanks.

It's all to do with frequency allocation in the UK and some technical stuff regarding the 5GHz spectrum. I read a great article on it but I can't find it again, sorry.

Assuming that your new router is a Sagemcom, then WiFi Optimisation cannot be disabled. I have carried out many totally independent investigations into this and normally, the problem is caused by something else. WiFi Optimisation has greatly improved anyway, since it was permitted to use the DFS channel ranges that form part of the 5GHz spectrum.

Wi-Fi interference (nothing to do with electrical interference) can cause:-

Slow speed,
intermittent dropouts,
breaks in the signal,
no signal at all,
or no internet access.

This can affect one or more devices. This can also lead to a permanent reduction in the speed of one or more devices. No ISP can be responsible for your local environment; this is mainly a byproduct of the popularity of Wi-Fi.

Generally speaking, the 2.4GHz band suffers far more from Wi-Fi interference than the much faster 5GHz band. However, the 2.4GHz band has a longer range than the 5GHz band and can penetrate walls better. This may very well change depending on your local area.

In other words, I offer a free, impartial analysis of your Wi-Fi network and will try to help you optimise your Wi-Fi connection. The next stage involves my sending out a guide to help you get important diagnostic information for me. I will then analyse these results for you and recommend changes to your router configuration, if required.

My TP-Link RE315 lost 5GHz contact with the TalkTalk WiFi hub 3 when the hub decided to use a DFS channel. I forced it back to channel 48 and then the extender was fine. I can't find any evidence that this is a restriction with the RE315 and the hub has stuck with channel 48 since I last set it.

I think my best option now is to monitor what happens on the 5GHz channel and request help if the channel is switched and the RE315 loses contact again. I'll then be able to report which 5GHz channel is the problem.

Edit: my Humax freeview recorder also lost contact with the higher 5GHz channel.

Hi @vadek

If a device or your TP-Link does not support the DFS channels, this is due to cost, I am afraid, due to extra circuitry involved in each WiFi adapter to conform to DFS regulations.

That is correct @vadek. However, it is supposed to also learn about the WiFi adapters or devices that you have & gradually adapt to their specifications.
