As of 31/08/2023, I can no longer send/receive emails in Outlook on my laptop. I can still email via webmail.

Checked server settings - match TalkTalk recommended ones.

Tried to get into advanced settings - not accessible and always get the message... Something went wrong and outlook couldn't save your account settings. Please try again.

What has gone wrong?

Desperate now - TalkTalk webchat couldn't help after 3 hours and then got cut off!

Settings changes must be carried out via an email profile or you'll get the error message you're seeing. Outlook supports secure mail and to update go via the Advanced setup settings of an email profile, as in this example for Windows 10 / 11

Select the Windows icon bottom left

Select the Settings cog icon

Select Accounts

Select Email & Accounts and for a first time setup select Add Account and enter the settings in the table

Or select the email account

Select Change account or double click on the email account

At that point on your device you ought to see the Outlook setup to enter the TalkTalk Mail server settings: NB All talktalk domains use the exact same IMAP secure settings.

Supported Outlook settings for IMAP email accounts are:

For a definitive check of settings take screenshots of the incoming and outgoing server settings, image edit to obscure the first part of the email address and upload here using the Camera icon (desktop browser) or Picture icon (mobile browser) above this reply area.

The above settings will save and connect Outlook to your mailbox.

Thank you Gondola, I followed your instructions up to double clicking on my account... I don't then see the Outlook setup to enter the server settings... instead, all I see are the lineone account settings with two options - 'change mailbox sync settings' and 'delete account from this device'.

That's looking like Windows Mail rather than Outlook. If you scroll down and select Advanced mailbox sync settings then under Sync options you'll require the following:

If in doubt, take a screenshot and upload here using the Camera icon above this Reply area and I'll take a look for you.

There's no scroll down option and yes, it might be windows because I clicked the window icon on the bottom left.

As an alternative, I have just tried going into Outlook and selecting File then accounts etc. I would like to show you that, but don't know how to photograph it without my personal detail in.

If you screenshot holding down Alt and PrtSc (print screen) keys and then image edit in Paint to obscure your personal data then you can safely upload here using the Camera icon above this reply area.

Windows is obviously not happy with you using Windows Mail and Outlook so if you don't use Windows Mail then go back and delete the TalkTalk managed lineone account from Windows Mail. i.e. 'delete account from this device'.

While you were replying, I was playing around and went into Server Settings through Outlook and under Outgoing mail and server authentication, ticked log on using user name and password instead of use same settings as my incoming mail server. This seems to have solved the problem and all my emails came through from 31/08/2023 onwards.

However your last post introduces another problem - you think I should delete the account from Windows Mail? Please not that I do not fully understand all the terminology. I will explain... I access my emails either by Outlook or webmail which I understand to be web based. Is what I describe as webmail the same as what you call Windows Mail?

You say you just changed the outgoing server setting to Log on using User Name and Password. That just affects the authentication for the sending of mail. So whilst that setting is something I recommend it will have no effect on receiving mail.

I diagnose that you've made some other change(s). The key thing is to check the settings are exactly as I gave them in my first reply to this topic.

Outlook is an email client software program often bundled with Microsoft Office software or as part of Office 365.

Windows Mail is the default email client software that's bundled with the Microsoft Windows operating system. You appear to have lineone email access set up in both Windows Mail and Outlook.

TalkTalk Mail webmail will access your lineone mailbox via an Internet browser for the World Wide Web (www) and hence the term webmail. Webmail just requires an Internet browser and the email address and password whereas email software like Windows Mail or Outlook requires specific server settings defined for both receiving and sending mail.

So, webmail is not the same as Windows Mail.

Thank you very much for your clear explanation of webmail and Windows Mail.

As for the Outlook send/receive problem, I'm really not sure what I did to fix it, which is a bit frustrating.

Could you help with the simultaneous problem I had of the Internet Email pop up box that keeps appearing whenever I click send/receive in Outlook. It's still popping up... asking to 'enter your user name and password for the following server'. Everything appears to be filled in. What I don't understand though is that the Server is outlook.office365.com

outlook.office365.com is the mail server for outlook / microsoft email addresses but not for TalkTalk Mail. So you have Outlook365 set up for outlook / hotmail / Microsoft mail and Windows Mail set up for the TalkTalk lineone mail account.

As it's apparently working you probably do have a Lineone email account set up in Outlook. Or maybe the lineone email account was set up some time ago as a secondary added account to an outlook.com email address OR you're auto forwarding your lineone emails? When I see exactly what you see I'd know what's going on.

In cases of confusion like this I need the whole story. What email accounts you have set up in Outlook and Windows Mail and what you need to retain. Because the fix will be to delete all email accounts from the device from all email software and to set up afresh. The lineone email settings for Outlook I gave in my first reply.
