Hi. I want to back up my TalkTalk (@lineone.net) emails to gmail, but don't want gmail to delete emails on my talktalk account. Is it correct that if I tick "Leave a copy of the retrieved message on the server" then all the emails will stay the same on TalkTalk. I hope somebody knows the answer! Thanks.

Hi @JMarsh1

Yes, you'll be able to set up a Gmail mail collection via the Gmail Settings, Accounts and Import tab.

In the Gmail desktop app:

Settings - See all settings

Accounts and Import

Check email from other accounts - Add an email Account
In the pop up window enter the TalkTalk lineone.net full email address - Next

Select Import emails from my other account (POP3) - Next
Username: Full email address
Password: Email password
POP Server: mail.talktalk.net
Port: 995
Tick - Leave a copy of retrieved message on the server
Tick - Always use a secure connection (SSL) when retrieving mail

Select Add Account

NB
You're leaving a copy of the message, that Gmail has retrieved via its POP3 collection, on the TalkTalk server so that any IMAP email account including TalkTalk Mail webmail will be able to see that message.

This method of mail collection by Gmail is reliable. Whereas auto-forwarding from TalkTalk or any other mailbox is not reliable. This is because Gmail may not authenticate all auto-forwarded messages that have a strict SPF policy that does not permit sending by TalkTalk mail servers. Those people that use auto forwarding often complain about 'missing emails'. Auto forwarding not being reliable is the reason.
