Hi Ric, the spammers source code can be found in Talktalk webmail by clicking on three dot logo, copy and paste the source code into microsoft windows, blank document, search the code using "search function" by putting in "http", this will reveal between 3-5 domain names.

These represent the picture png that loads into the email, the landing page where the email takes you to and the campaign where the data is harvested.

The format will be http there will be : followed by // followed by a domain name and then . followed by com. (The reason I spell this out is because talktalk look for domain names and won't let the format to be posted). The spammer can place anything in front of the . and com so what is in front of . and com is the domain name. Think before . and com to the next . is the domain.

In web mail click on the COG top right, click on "All settings" and slide the drop down menu until you find "Rules" click on this , click on "Add Rule".

A new box opens with "New Rule" in the top box, delete this (New Rule) by backspace and add the domain name that before the . and com, and add Body .

Go down to "add condition" and click, from the drop down menu click "Body" , opposite this the word "contains" and fill in box should be displayed, in this box add the Domain name.

What this does is look for that domain name in any email received and now you need to decide what you want to do with it go to "add action" box below and click it, a drop down menu appears so you can mark it as spam, discard it or reject it.

Once you have done this save this. What you have done is set up your spam filter to act on a domain purchased by the spammer to spam, none of these domains are from any company that you would want to receive a spam email.

What I advise is Join Spamcop its FREE and you will get a forwarding email address, what you do is forward a copy of your spam email to this email address and they will process it and send reports to those Registrars who sold the domain names and also where the emails originated from.

I have tried this and looked for a common word in all the spam emails I received, so the spammer used the same source code in these emails and set up the spam filter to reject it as spam, the next email I received he had omitted that line, so it worked. By using these domain names you are hitting his pocket as he wants to send out all his emails to a list of Talktalk subscribers, if they start to bounce he has to buy a new domains.

Now Talktalk could do this, we place enough spam emails into the spam box and if Talktalk did this the spammer would have to fork out a lot of money for each email if 3 domains are blocked each time.

CanTheSpam

Hi @Ricardo80

View the email header (View Source from the More actions triple dots (ellipsis) menu icon) and look at the email address within chevron brackets on the Return-Path: line and the From: line and see if there's a common factor across the various emails. e.g. the same domain is originating most of the spam.

Is there a common factor in the Subject: line?

To be able to set a simple Rule to work across multiple emails there needs to be some unique identifier that's capable of being used in a Rule to divert the spam from the Inbox whilst leaving the genuine mail messages untouched.

The quick answer is no, the + symbol is not going to be recognised by the sieve filter.

I'll explain what's happening with those addresses.

Gmail deals with the first example by sending incoming mail and replies to a Gmail mailbox that has the address saddamms442335@gmail.com and the part after the + is ignored as far as delivering mail to a mailbox. This part can be filtered by the recipient to individual defined folders but may also be used by criminals or bulk mailers to identify who responded.

TalkTalk Mail deals with the + symbol in a similar way. The email address is defined by a Local Part @ Domain but the Local Part can be split into two as a User + Detail @ Domain.

The sieve filter will therefore recognise the User part and the Detail part and the Domain part. So. if you had all spam arriving from Saddamms442335 you could apply a Rule to detect that as the User. Unfortunately in the two 'From' addresses you gave the only common factor is the domain being Gmail / Googlemail. Whilst you could set up a Filter rule to look for the Gmail or Googlemail domains you'd also have to include an exclusion for all of your genuine contacts that use Gmail.

On the basis that there aren't many genuine Gmail contacts you need to include in a Rule, first create a Rule to identify those wanted Gmail contacts.

Rule set for 'Apply rule if any condition is met'

The condition is 'E-mail Address' 'Header From' 'All' 'Is exactly' 'user1@gmail.com'

Further conditions 'E-mail Address' 'Header From' 'All' 'Is exactly' 'user2@gmail.com'

etc - replace user1 with the real username and keep this rule updated with new genuine Gmail contacts by adding further conditions.

Action 'File into' 'Select folder' 'Wanted_Gmail'

You need to create this folder for your wanted Gmail contacts and their mail messages.

Tick Process subsequent rules.

Now create a Rule to put all remaining Gmail and Googlemail into the Trash folder

Rule set for 'Apply rule if any condition is met'

The condition is 'E-mail Address' 'Header From' 'Part Domain' 'Ends with gmail.com'

And a second condition 'E-mail Address' 'Header From' 'Part Domain' 'Ends with googlemail.com'

(NB omit the ' marks from the actual rules)

The suggested action is 'File into' and the folder 'Trash' which gives you 30 days to review for any new wanted Gmail contacts prior to auto deletion.

Me too driving me nuts. Initially was marking them as spam, when I try that now, email totally locks up for some reason. Have to kick it off then go back in, not ideal. Will have a look on pc later to try some of the suggestions on here.

Only got the odd one before the upgrade at least a dozen a day now.
