Data transferred between new and old Apple iPad but emails not transferred.

unfortunately I have forgotten my email account password and need to reset can you advise how to continue?

The Reset password now button in the help article Changing your email password will take you to password reset and recovery.

If you have set up password recovery options, in advance, that you recognise from the *****hints, then you can send your alternate email address a link or your mobile a 6-digit code to authorise a password reset.

If your emails are still in the online mailbox then setting up an IMAP email account on the iPad will synchronise to the online mailbox and you'll see all mail messages that are there.
