having searched my emails and found a number I no longer want how do you mark them so they can be deleted?

Using a browser in desktop mode you can

Select the individual mail messages and drag and drop to the Trash folder
Select in the List view a group of messages via the tick boxes and either
a) Drag and drop the group of selected messages to the Trash folder or
b) Select the Trash icon from the Toolbar

Using a browser in mobile mode you can

Select a folder and tap the Select link top right
Scroll the list and select the message tick boxes
Select the Trash icon from the blue header bar
Select Cancel from the blue header bar to return to the normal list view

Let me know if that works for you.

Items in the Trash folder are auto deleted after 30 days. If you inadvertently delete something you wish to recover then within the 30 days period select the Trash folder and drag and drop the wanted email to your choice of folder or select the email and select from the toolbar the Move icon and from there select your choice of folder.
