@nameunknown_ Thank you for your message and suggestions, much appreciaqted.

Apologies for my late reply, unfortunately I had to go away for a few days.

At the moment, I can read new lineone.net mail without issue and send via my tiscali.co.uk account (both via Thunderbird).

I am apprehensive about doing too much right now in case I make the issue worse. It is rather like Russian Roulette every time I hit the lineone.net 'send' button and I really don't want to load any more image backups unless absolutely necessary.

I have written to TalkTalk who have responded and tell me they will do a full investigation into the problem. Perhaps that will be productive.

I will have a careful read through of your suggestions and have a good think about what to do next.

Thanks again,

Regards Tony

My email has been working fine and I haven't made any changes to my accounts for a long time.

Yesterday, however (4th August 2025) my lineone.net account is causing Thunderbird to crash (and in fact locks out the whole system).

If I send a message it appears to be sending ok, but then I get an error message saying "Your message was sent but a copy was not placed in your sent folder (sent) due to network or file access errors".

Thunderbird then crashes both itself and the whole system and I have to do a hard reboot to get the system up again.

The email is actually being sent but not being placed in the sent folder.

My tiscali.co.uk account is working correctly through Thunderbird without issue.

I have tried sending directly from web mail which is also working correctly.

I have reloaded Thunderbird with the same results.

I have also run a system restore from about a week ago but no difference.

As mentioned, I have not made any changes at all to my settings and this problem has only arisen over the past 2 days.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Have you noticed any patterns in when the crashes occur (e.g., after sending a certain type of email)?

Many thatks for your message @Mandisa-TT

There is no obvious pattern that I can see and the propblem arises with every email I send from my lineone.net account.

Another thing I have noticed is that messages are not being saved in the draft folder. There is a header record present but no email content. It would appear that when the system attempts to backup to draft the problem arises and the system locks out requiring a hard reboot.

This is only happening on my lineone.net account - the tiscali.co.uk account is working correctly.

In an attempt to fix this, I have rebuilt my C: drive from a full backup (made when everything was working) but the error is still present so it would appear to me that the problem is not to do with Thunderbird so must be to do with my TalkTalk account.

Web mail continues to work correctly.

Any more ideas would be much appreciated.

Re: Thunderbird crashing when sending mail from my lineone.net account

Okay so I've gotten some information and need you to use the steps below so we can resolve the issue.

If you use the “Thunderbird” application and have issues retrieving your emails, you need to check that you’re not using an “Encrypted password” in your settings. Using “Encrypted password” has been superseded and we no longer support it.

To make sure you’re not using “Encrypted password”, follow these steps:

In Thunderbird, go to your TalkTalk Mail account and click on Views settings for this account

Select Server Settings, in the list on the left

Make sure Normal password is selected as the Authentication method.

If you switch from “Encrypted password” to “Normal password”, please make sure you use SSL/TLS as the “Connection security” (together with Port 993 for IMAP or Port 995 for POP) to maintain the maximum level of security. Thanks

I had an account where no folder was selected for saving a copy of sent emails. When I sent an email, this message popped up: "Your message was sent but a copy was not placed in your sent folder (Sent) due to network or file access errors. You can retry or save the message locally to Local Folders/Sent-<email address here>. Fortunately, in my case Thunderbird does not crash.

Right click on the account name (email address) in the left pane, select Settings, then select 'Copies & Folders' for the account. What is selected for 'Place a copy in'? As you also have an issue with draft messages, what is selected for 'Keep draft messages in'?

Hello @nameunknown_

Many thanks for your message.

Sadly, I have already checked the settings within Copies and Folders.

I unchecked the Sent Folder option and selected "Other" asd selected "Sent on" my email address.

Ditto for Drafts and Templates.

I then tried sending an email and it worked!

However, sending further email resulted in exactly the same error as before.

I don't quite see how this is a Thunderbird issue as I have not made any changes at all to Thunderbird or to my TalkTalk settings for a very long time.

Everything was working just fine until mid day on the 4th August.

So far I have run a system restore from about a week ago. I have completely restored my C: drive from backup. I have reinstalled Thunderbird. I have run Norton's registry cleanup. I have given Thunderbird full access rights in Norton 360 all with no effect.

The only thing I haven't done (yet) is to delete Thunderbird and do a full reinstallation. However I don't see that this is the issue as everything was working correctly and I am now running on a restored C: drive.

This is driving me crazy - help please!. Regards Tony

@argchichester wrote:

I don't quite see how this is a Thunderbird issue as I have not made any changes at all to Thunderbird or to my TalkTalk settings for a very long time.

You may not have made any changes, but it is possible that Thunderbird is not functoning correctly due to something being corrupted. The fact that Thunderbird is crashing may also point to there being something wrong with the application or configuration files.

On a previous occasion, you said "Web mail continues to work correctly."

Webmail is just another user interface to the servers for your email account. If there are no issues sending emails via webmail, then it seems likely the issue preventing you sending emails via Thunderbird is related to Thunderbird.

One way to fix possible corruption may be to delete the account from Thunderbird and re-create it. If you are using IMAP, then all of your emails should be restored after you re-create the account in Thunderbird. If you are using POP and not keeping copies on the server, then you would need to save emails to local folders, and restore them to the account from the local folders.

Hello again @nameunknown_

I understand what you are saying but as explained I am running on a fully restored C: drive so how can there be a corruption present? I agree that there might have been a problem with the Thunderbird version before I did the full restoration, but I am now running on a rebuilt system, backed up when everything was working correctly.

I hate computers.

Tony
