About UK Emergency Alerts

Emergency Alerts is a UK government service that will warn you if there’s a danger to life nearby.

In an emergency, your mobile phone or tablet may:

  • Make a loud siren-like sound, even if it’s set on silent
  • Vibrate
  • Read out the alert

The sound and vibration will last for about 10 seconds.

The government does not need to know your phone number or location to send you an alert.

Only the government and the emergency services will be able to send alerts. For example, you may get alerts about:

  • Flooding
  • Fire
  • Extreme weather

If for any reason you need to opt out of this service, and do not want your mobile to be alerted (even when on silent), please follow these steps on your mobile device:

Apple

Select Settings and then Notifications
Scroll down to the bottom of the screen to Emergency Alerts
Use the toggle buttons to update your preferences
If your toggle is green, your mobile will be alerted. If your toggle is grey, this indicates the service is not active and your mobile will not be alerted.

Android

Select Settings and search Emergency alerts to quickly find the correct option
Use the toggle buttons in the Broadcast Settings to update your preferences
If your toggle is blue, your mobile will be alerted. If your toggle is grey, this indicates the service is not active and your mobile will not be alerted.
