I can't send or receive emails

No ratings

If you're having problems sending or receiving emails, select your problem from the list below to fix the issue. Remember, email is not always instant; it could take a little while for a message to be delivered.

Here are the most common reasons for being unable to send email:

  • No internet connection: It might sound obvious, but make sure you're connected to the internet. Open your web browser to check
  • Address not found: Make sure the address you're sending to has the right spelling
  • Email too large: If you're trying to send an email with attachment(s), remember that the size limit will vary depending on your email address. Anything over this limit won't send. Try sending your attachments in multiple emails, zipping the file first, or using online storage to share your files
  • Mailbox full: If the recipient has no space in their inbox, your email won't be delivered and If your inbox is full, your email won't send. Try deleting some emails and emptying your trash folder
  • Email Settings: If you've recently set up your email client, make sure it's set up correctly. You can check your settings at Email Settings. This step doesn't apply if you're using webmail
  • Spam filters: Check the content of the email, could some of the words in the subject have caused the spam filter to block the email? Simply including an email subject may fix the problem
  • The destination email address - Try sending an email to a different address that you know is working and check if it's received. If it arrives, the problem is most likely to be with the original email address you were trying to reach

If it's none of the above, try waiting a little while and sending again. Often this will fix the problem.

There's often a simple explanation for this. Firstly, check the following:

  • Check all of your folders: Email may have been going directly into a different folder instead of your inbox
  • Check your blocked senders' list: The person sending the email may be blocked by mistake. But don't worry, it's easy to edit your blocked senders' list, just follow these steps;
  1. Select Settings on the left menu
  2. Select Mail
  3. Scroll down to filters, Check the Blocked senders list, if the email is here just select it and select the Delete button
  • Make sure email forwarding is turned off: This could be causing your emails to be sent to a different email address
  • The destination email address - Try sending an email to a different address that you know is working and check if it's received. If it arrives, the problem is most likely to be with the original email address you were trying to reach

If the problem continues, it may be an issue with your account setup. Try setting it up again.

If you're getting an error message when you're using TalkTalk email in a mail client, please try the steps below:

  1. Check that you're connected to the internet - it might sound obvious, but it's easy to lose your connection without realising it
  2. Close and re-open your mail client
  3. Restart your computer
  4. Make sure your mail client is set up correctly. Visit email settings for help with this

If you're still having issues, you may have to contact the client-vendor for help

You'll know if your emails are being blocked by your recipient because they'll bounce back into your inbox with a Delivery Failure message. This will confirm why your mail can’t be sent.

It is possible that the person you are trying to email has an issue on their end and the problem is not with your service.

There are a few things you can do to work out what may be the issue.

  • Blocked sender list: It might be a good idea to contact the person you're trying to email and make sure you’re not on their blocked sender list
  • If you keep a copy of your sent emails, check your sent items folder. If the email does not appear in sent items, check your draft folder to make sure the email was sent. If it's not here either, then the problem will most likely be with your browser
  • Try updating to the latest version of your browser, then try again
  • Contact the person or business you are trying to email and see if anyone else has had problems emailing them. This will tell you right away if the issue is with your email or with their email
  • Mailbox full: If the person/organisation you're emailing has no space in their inbox, your email won't be delivered. Ask them to delete some, then try sending again
  • Spam filters: Check the content of the email, could some of the words in the subject have caused the spam filter to block the email?

If it's none of the above, try waiting a little while and sending again. Often this will fix the problem

If you get this message, the chances are you are trying to send to a large group of people so we suggest retrying with a smaller group.
