Online payment through my account

I pay by direct debit, but this month I had to extend my payment date. I was told by an adviser that I would have to make a card payment through my account for this month. I have tried this several times, making sure the details are correct but keep getting this message  ":Your payment could not be processed. Please contact your card issuer or try again using a different card."

I definitely have funds available now and I am at a loss as to why this is happening.
