Hi Barnetboy, if you follow Gondola's advice you'll not go far wrong.

Hi Barnetboy
Is the Auto forward the only Filter Rule? And is the Auto forward set to keep a copy of the message?
If messages still disappear from the Inbox then change the password to lock out any unauthorized or rogue apps from connecting to the mailbox.

Hi Gondola, My online inbox was empty, there was mail in the trash box which I have moved back into inbox. I do have an autoforward set up on the account and that is working fine. I haven't done any alterations to my account settings and the test message I sent to my self worked.

Hi Barnetboy
The most common cause of mail disappearing from the Inbox is that a POP3 mail collection is downloading and deleting mail from the online Inbox. First check your online mailbox.
Select here: Sign in to TalkTalk Mail
Enter your email address and password, select Sign in.
Check the Inbox first and then check Spam and Trash folders for mail messages that may have been diverted from the Inbox. Bear in mind the spam and trash folders normally contain mail not older than 30 days.
Compose and self-send the same mailbox a mail message. Check that the message sends without error, is copied into the Sent objects folder and arrives and stays in the Inbox. You could also try sending to test-mail@talktalk.net to see that you do get an auto response to the Inbox.
Mail not reaching the Inbox could mean there's a Filter rule, including an Auto forward which is a special filter rule, that's diverting, discarding or blocking mail.
Let us know of any error message, or if mail did not arrive in the Inbox or disappeared from the Inbox. Collecting mail messages with a POP3 mail account or mail collection service, like Gmail, may be deleting messages from the online Inbox.
Have you recently set up a new POP3 mail account or mail collection service on a device under your control? If not then you may wish to consider if your email password(s) have been compromised.
Scanning your devices for viruses / malware and then changing and upgrading the passwords would be the next step if there's any evidence of a compromised mailbox / mailboxes.
