I was with Tesco, but when they closed their ISP service I was automatically transferred to TalkTalk. I'm still using the Tesco router. Everything was fine until about May 23 when I tried to send an email and my sender's address was rejected, saying authentication was required. I hadn't touched any settings and incoming email is still OK. 

My impaired hearing rules out the telephone and three snailmails to TalkTalk haven't produced a solution.

I would be really grateful if anybody could please put me back in touch with the world ! 

My computer is a MacBook Air with OS X version 10.9.5 Mountain Lion.

Hi normanc, do you have any problems with websites? Are you using TalkTalk webmails or using a mail client?
