Office 365 Outlook connecting to talktalk email address

I have just loaded a clean version of windows 10 and office 365 onto my desktop.  I have tried to set up my talktalk email address in outlook to send and receive emails, but it won't connect.  I've tried IMAP and POP3 with the talktalk settings but no joy.  Any help gratefully received, thanks.

Interesting. Outlook would normally create that profile on the first time that Outlook is launched. Maybe Outlook required closing and relaunching before adding the email account that would automatically be associated with the profile. However, all's well that ends well.

We appreciate you taking time out for the feedback.

It was setting up the new email through a profile, rather than directly through new email.

What was the Microsoft workaround?

Hi Gondola

Microsoft got back to me with a workaround.  Not quite sure why my way didn't work, it had the same settings.

Thanks for trying to help, appreciated.

Best wishes

Gavin

I haven't seen the Outlook settings you're trying to use. And you aren't revealing the exact error message(s). Both would help to identify an issue.

Troubleshoot by downloading and installing Thunderbird email software from Mozilla. Setup is the same as I've described.

The settings in the help article are a starting point.

The incoming server would normally be set to SSL/TLS encryption port 993.

Outgoing server to StartTLS port 587 and tick My outgoing server requires authentication.

Use normal password in conjunction with the Username as the full email address and enter that for both incoming and outgoing servers.

If you think the password is weak then upgrade the password but I'd expect the other device to fail on password security also even if the webmail sign in works.

Outlook for Android / iOS mobile devices does fail because the software does not make a direct connection to the TalkTalk servers.

Hi Gondola,  It's a standalone desktop - no VPN.  I'm using the settings given here Email settings - IMAP & POP3 - TalkTalk Help & Support and not clicking secure password.  I'm wondering if outlook has changed to not allow new connections from external email providers?

If you're using a VPN I'd switch the VPN path off whilst setting up.

What server settings are you using? Screenshot the general, outgoing server and advanced tabs in Outlook, image edit to obscure the first part of the email address and upload here so I can see what you see.

Thanks Gondola.  The email address is on a fibre account with talktalk. I can access emails through office 365 outlook on my laptop, so the email is working fine. I just can't connect on a new installation of office 365 outlook - even using the same settings as my laptop! So i think there is an issue with the new outlook installation - no idea what as it seems okay other than won't connect to the talktalk servers.

Hi GavinWalker1

Heads up that orphan email addresses, that's TalkTalk Mail addresses not added to an active TalkTalk Consumer customer MyAccount, are being limited to Internet browser webmail access and flagged for deletion if no action is taken*. TalkTalk email notifications are being sent.

Are you a TalkTalk Consumer home broadband or MailPlus, mail only, subscriber customer and if so is the TalkTalk Mail email address added to your customer MyAccount?  Let us know your customer status and if you're taking a full-fibre home broadband service from TalkTalk. Manage TalkTalk Mail options are not yet included in the full-fibre MyAccount management.

Email not showing in My Account

Select here: Sign in to TalkTalk Mail

Enter your email address and password, select Sign in. If you know the current email password you'll get signed in via this webmail access.

* The action to take to restore email access on supported devices is:

  • Add the email address to an active TalkTalk Consumer customer MyAccount
  • If not a customer, rejoin TalkTalk for home broadband or subscribe to  TalkTalk MailPlus
