Annex A or B

Hi,

So I've been looking at replacement routers for my VDSL2 service.

Most 3rd party all in ones only seem to support Annex A? I read that UK generally use Annex B which the Talktalk Hub and the Huawei HG612 both sync using B when connected at home. Seem to getting some mixed answers over A or B so looking for some clarity on whats what tbh!

Current stats

Bearer: 0, Upstream rate = 1211 Kbps, Downstream rate = 15602 Kbps
Link Power State: L0
Mode: VDSL2 Annex B
VDSL2 Profile: Profile 17a
TPS-TC: PTM Mode(0x0)
Trellis: U:ON /D:ON
Line Status: No Defect
Training Status: Showtime
Down Up
SNR (dB): 5.6 6.2
Attn(dB): 30.8 0.0
Pwr(dBm): 11.2 5.0

Uptime: 3 days 1 hour 57 min 25 sec

Resyncs: 0

I looked at the Netgear D7000 and the TP-Link VR400 but both only state Annex A? Would this be suitable for UK VDSL2?

Thanks

Solution

I picked up a 2nd hand Netgear D7000 version 1 last week and although it doesn't tell me what Annex is being used in the regular Netgear GUI. Installing "DSLstats", showed that it's running on Annex B.

Hope this helps you decide.

xdslctl info --stats
xdslctl: ADSL driver and PHY status
Status: Showtime
Last Retrain Reason: 0
Last initialization procedure status: 0
Max: Upstream rate = 23955 Kbps, Downstream rate = 82709 Kbps
Bearer: 0, Upstream rate = 19999 Kbps, Downstream rate = 80000 Kbps
Bearer: 1, Upstream rate = 0 Kbps, Downstream rate = 0 Kbps
Link Power State: L0
Mode: VDSL2 Annex B
VDSL2 Profile: Profile 17a
TPS-TC: PTM Mode(0x0)
Trellis: U:ON /D:ON
Line Status: No Defect
Training Status: Showtime
Down Up
SNR (dB): 6.2 15.3
Attn(dB): 7.7 0.0
Pwr(dBm): 12.8 -9.7

EDIT:

Just found this in the DSLStats, could be the Annex A that you've encountered:

DSLAM type / SW version: BDCM:0xa48c (164.140) / v0xa48c
Modem/router firmware: AnnexA version - A2pvbH042n.d26b
DSL mode: VDSL2 Profile 17a
Status: Showtime
Uptime: 1 day 9 hours 27 min 46 sec
Resyncs: 0 (since 13 Feb 2019 06:41:32)

-----------

Either way, The D7000 seems to work perfectly well with TalkTalk.

Hi zomby,

Possible that it was. The HG612 seems to pickup annex B when running Dslstats (had it running for a week since swapping to this from TT hub).

Thanks for the confirmation about the netgear!

For some reason network naming schemes like to maximise confusion.

Openreach uses an Annex B bandplan (tone set) from the VDSL2 spec (G.993.2) over Annex A physical infrastructure. So for the UK, the modem hardware/firmware needs to be Annex A, but it will sync using Annex B.

Depending on the router, both may appear in diagnostic reports. Often this is just referred to as the “mode” which doesn’t help distinguish what they are actually referring to.

Simples. :nerd:

Yeah it sounds very simple! 😂

That does make a little more sense though.

Thanks
