Specific devices experiencing massive speed drops and connection loss.

Hello,

For the past few weeks a few members of my family had been complaining about slow speeds on our Wifi network on their laptops and phones. On my own phone, Laptop and Wired Desktop, my speed was completely fine, so I assumed the problem lied with their own devices, as they came and went randomly.

 

Occasionally they would lose internet access entirely, with the Router not reporting any problems. Strangely the way I found to fix this was to change the DNS server. Even just alternating between GoogleDNS and the default Talktalk one each time immediately solved the problem for them. Once again, my own phone, laptop and desktop were unaffected in these situations.

 

Now today, the problem seems to have changed devices. My sister's phone now has expected speeds, yet mine have dropped significantly. With my phone reading below 1Mbps download on a speed test. Strangely this is also affecting my desktop on Ethernet connection, also registering less than 2Mbps, whilst a few other wireless devices are working at 30Mbps just fine.

 

I've tried changing DNS again, changing the Wifi channel, Band settings (Every wireless device except our printer is on the 5ghz Band) and restarted the Router a few times but nothing has had any effect.

We have around 8-9 devices connected to the router almost constantly, could this be a result of the router being overloaded and prioritizing specific devices?

Yup, that's correct.

I'd also like to add that overnight we lost connection entirely again. Sister's phone, laptop, and my wired desktop were all completely unable to connect to the internet throughout the night, yet my phone was perfectly fine. Router showed no problems on its status.

Switching to Google DNS in the morning solved the problem instantaneously.

Line test is clear and router is in sync at 21.8Mbps

 

Could you switch your router off and leave it off for 30 minutes then switch back on and retest. Please let us know if there's any improvement

Apologies for the extremely long delay. The problem had the irritating frequency of only occurring when I was out of the house, but today it happened again. Sister's laptop and phone ran at extremely slow speeds, my computer fine. I flipped the DNS as usual and everything returned to normal for 10 minutes before slowing for her again.

I restarted the router as advised, and once it was operational again all wireless devices were left without internet. To clarify, they could connect to the router, but all were unable to connect to the internet from there, whilst my Desktop was running completely fine through wired connection. 15 minutes later, I enabled Google DNS, and once again all service was restored.

 

I'm baffled as to how just the act of toggling an alternate DNS on/off can have such an effect on this.

Thank you for the replacement router, it has entirely solved the problem this topic was formed about. (There was a delay in setting up as it was delivered to my neighbour's address instead)

 

Unfortunately this has now resulted in a new problem: I've had the router running for 3 days now, and on all three my speed has dropped dramatically at night until the router is restarted. Down to 2mb/s on the first night, 800kb/s on the second and recently 6mb/s tonight. These speeds are reported by running speed tests on multiple different connected devices, whilst the Router's settings page still reports a full 28mb/s speed as usual. After a restart, speeds all return to normal, until the next night when the problem occurs again.

 

Is it alright to pursue this problem in this topic, or should I create a new one?

Since my last message, it happened again in this same night. Back down to 7mb/s until router restarted. So it's not based on the router's uptime, it just seems to happen randomly after 8pm. Speeds are unstable and feel significantly slower.

Further update: I've had to swap the previous Router back in again today as the connection became nigh unusable.

 

Midway through the day, suddenly no web browser on any device was able to connect to any website. For some reason my speed test app still worked, and it reported a 2mb/s speed. I restarted the router, everything worked, then within a few hours all connections were failing once again.
