Internet dropping and slow speeds

For the last three months we have experienced intermittent periods of low Wi-Fi speeds and periodic complete drop outs in the internet. We have tried various different channels on the router and used 2 talk talk provided routers as well as buying a third router to see if that was the cause.

We have been on to talk talk support for several hours going through the various tests, the set up help etc but with no success. We live in an average sized new build house but are often experiencing drop outs and down speeds of  less than 10mbps (according to the talk talk speed test) whilst the same test is showing good speeds to the router.

Please Help!!

Hi Patsy68

I'm sorry to hear this.

Please can you update your Community Profile to include your name and TalkTalk landline number, we can then look into this further.

Thanks

Hi @Patsy68,

Have you been able to tell if it is specifically the 2.4GHz or 5GHz band that has a problem, or are devices that use either of those bands having problems.

Have you tried using smartphone Apps like this to see what channels are being used within range of your smartphone, this would allow you to see how strong your own Wi-Fi signal was compared to other signals (i.e. your neighbours routers) in various locations in your home.

Have you ensured your router is well positioned. Ideally it should be at table height, out in the open (not in a cupboard or behind furniture), facing towards the area where you want the strongest signal, not near items that could cause interference like microwaves, cordless phones etc, and not next to things that could reflect the signal like mirrors or radiators.

For one of the TalkTalk staff on this community to be able to look into this you will need to update your community profile to include your name, landline telephone number that your TalkTalk service is provided on & an alternative contact number. This will allow them to identify you, and they will then be able to help.

Don't post any personal details in this thread, just add them to your community profile (only you and the TalkTalk staff on this community can see your profile details).

The staff here won't be around now until Monday, but they should be able to respond to this post early next week to help.
