Problems with Twitch.tv and internet drop outs

I suppose you may or may not be aware of twitch.tv where you can watch all kinds of live broadcasts mainly focused on gaming and broadcasting live tournaments. I like to watch competitive gaming in my spare time and have been for the past 5 years or so. however over the past month or so I am having massive problems with constant buffering. I usually watch in 720p (we have (70+ mb dl and 17ish upload) this has obviously never caused problems when watching previously. However the problems don’t stop there as the streams will still buffer every 1-2mins even on the lowest quality (180p). this is strange as our internet is very stable and I never experience packet loss or changes in ping when gaming. I curiously tried to watch a live stream on youtube and I watched a live tournament for around 2 hours on 1080p without any stutters or freezes at all. the issue effects all devices (my pc which is a wired connection by means of ethernet, my ipad, my phone and also our wired office pc) they all have the same issue of the stream buffering every couple of mins no matter the quality.

I ran a traceroute to google and pinged 70times, we had around 18ms ping with 0% packet loss. so we know our connection is fine typically. I tried a second traceroute to twitch.tv and this is what I noticed, the ping is 12-13ms. Every 10-15 pings it would say “connection lost to server” consistently. Would this suggest a port forwarding issue or a throttling issue. I can watch the streams no problem on mobile data so I know there is no issue with the website. Should I look into port forwarding? this seems strange to me, as I have no problem for years and years.

I didn’t have this issue when I was using your ADSL Broadband service. I’ve noticed as well that my internet is dropping completely any time between midnight and 2am. It’s literslly fallen over bang on midnight tonight and is still off now. It eventually comes back on but who knows why it drops out.

I will do some more when home later on.

For others suffering the same issues, if you Google Pingplotter and download the trial, that's the software I used. Start a trace and then leave it running for the data.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay. They have requested some more pings and traces as this will help with our investigation please.

Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for retesting and I'm sorry to hear this. I've let our Network Engineers know now and asked if they can take another look. Would it be possible to run another wired ping and trace route in case our Network Team request this again?

I'll also let you know as soon as I receive an update back.

Thanks

what exactly was changed @Michelle-TalkTalk ? and why was something changed for the worse in the first place. Paying extra for speedboost and being unable to even watch a 180p low res live stream is pretty shambolic in my eyes.

Exactly the same for me. No change at all.

Hi,

We believe that this should now be resolved. How have you found the connection since your last post?

Thanks

I also have problems with Instagram videos and pictures loading for a long time, anyone else experiencing this. I have 80 down and 20 up, no problems at all watching 4k on youtube for several hours on a livestream.

same issue, I reported it 2 weeks ago too. It’s got to be a routing issue, I am also from East Midlands. any updates, I am getting very impatient and I’m sure these guys are too

I think it’s safe to say this isn’t a hardware or software issue considering the amount of people reporting the same thing.

In the hope this might convince you there's an issue, I've run pingplotter for a while this evening, with the following results:

18% lost packets when pinging 1 per second, at the final hop from Talktalk's network to Twitch.tv.

Is this still considered normal behaviour?

Hi

Ok, The connection looks ok.  The earlier trace routes you posted show no issues.  The hoptimes to reach twitch are low and look fine.  I've compared the trace to my own (Liverpool) and the times are similar.

When you are on the site, are all live streams failing to play no matter which are selected.

Thanks

Karl.

I would like to chime in and mention I am having an identical issue.

I suspected it was down to router hardware (I was using an aging Netgear R7000) and so completely changed my network infrastructure to multiple Unifi WAPs and a Unifi USG. Still the same issues, both wired with ethernet and wireless. No issues on 4g on mobile.I'm based in the East Midlands, if that helps.

This feels like a routing issue between Talktalk and Twitch. It's very frustrating.

Hi PWhiteley12

Can you connect up the wifi hub and use that for a while.  I'll check it has the later firmware and then we can record some connection data with our network tool and see what that shows.

Thanks

OK, just leave it connected there for now pending further advice from the OCE.

So there is. Thanks for that.

plugged directly into the socket but still absolutely no difference. Lasts about a minute streaming on whatever device I use and just freezes.

If it is a pre-filtered socket then there will be a test socket behind the faceplate. You will need a plugin microfilter to connect your router.
