If, like me, you were hooked on the unexpected bleakness of New Zealand scenery and strange characters in Top of the Lake, series 1 you'll be looking forward to Director Jane Campion's mystery drama Top of the Lake : China Girl, series 2. (BBC2)
I don't know where the lake fits in except as the hometown of Detective Robin Giffin who has returned to her work-life in Sydney, Australia. A body dubbed “China Girl” washes up on Bondi Beach. With few clues and little hope of finding her killer, Robin realises “China Girl” didn’t die alone. So with views of Sydney and Harbour City, Hong Kong on offer, the bleakness of season 1 will be replicated by the dark criminal underbelly of those locations. Nicole Kidman also features as 'Julia' in a moody storyline intertwined with that of Detective Giffin played by Elizabeth Moss. Transmission dates (July) to be anounced.
The first series of Top of the Lake won the 2013 Emmy for Outstanding Cinematography as well as the 2014 Golden Globe best actress award for Elizabeth Moss as Detective Robin Giffin.
Thanks to See-Saw Films and BBC
If you'd like to catch up with Top of the Lake series 1 the re-run starts on YouView BBC2 tonight (7th July) at 11.05pm.
The remote mountains of New Zealand's South Island towering above the lake is the perpetual backdrop to a host of hauntingly strange Jane Campion characters.
