Four simple ways to help your children study safely online

TalkTalk Products Team

It's that time again, the end of summer holiday and the start of a new year of school. As students head back to the classroom with their mobile devices and laptops in hands, it is important to ask yourself (as a parent) how comfortable you feel about your child owning a device that connects to the internet. We're all aware of the potential threats that lurk in the online world.

It's crucial to protect our children, but how can we avoid online dangers? Here are four simple ways you can keep your children safe in cyberspace, whether they are doing homework, gaming or browsing.

1. Use security software to protect from viruses and other malicious software

Install up-to-date security software onto your children's devices, including their smartphones and tablets. TalkTalk's SuperSafe offers the right solution for the entire family. The software covers all PCs, Macs, smartphones and tablets.

2. Set appropriate access limits if you are worried about the content they'll look at

You may not be able to always see over your child's shoulder, but you can still protect them from inappropriate content (for example adult content and violent gaming). TalkTalk's SuperSafe's parental control feature allows you to block inappropriate content, as well as harmful websites on their PC, tablet and smartphone.

You can select exactly what websites you want to block by selecting the content theme from Adult content to Gambling. You can select exactly what websites you want to block by selecting the content theme from Adult content to Gambling.

In addition, you can set up a password so your child must ask you for permission before downloading apps which could cost you money. Unfortunately, some apps access things you don't want them to have access to, for instance the camera, microphone, contacts and photos. With the application privacy feature you can check what access each app has.

The parental control feature also lets you set internet access time limits for children to ensure that your children are doing their homework and going to bed when they are supposed to.

3. Be aware of online predators

Speak to your children about the risks of talking to people they don't know online. Let them know they can always come to you if they are worried about anything, such as cyber bullying or unwanted attention from strangers. Regular and open conversation is the best way to keep an eye on your child's online life. You may not understand the latest app they and their friends are obsessed with, but ask about it. They will only share it with you if they think you are really interested and not grilling them.

4. Encourage them to be social but safe

These days, children are more tech savvy than their parents, so acknowledge and encourage it.

However, don't think that kids' online and offline lives are completely separate. It is important to remind your children not to share any private information on Facebook, Snapchat, WhatsApp, among other social platforms. Privacy settings on these sites can be confusing and frequently change, so check their accounts regularly to ensure they are not open to the public.Your school days may be far behind you, but there is still homework to do when it comes to keeping your family safe online. But, by protecting their devices with an award winning security solution like SuperSafe, utilising parental controls and fostering an open conversation with your children about their online habits, you can rest assured that they are ready to head back to school.

I have Norton Security, do I need Supersafe security? I don't pay as a family member get 2 licences with his Norton subscription.  Can I use both?

It is generally not recommended to run two real time anti-virus checkers at the same time.

Basically just up to you to decide which one you think is best, and what the costs are if that is relevant.

But if you are happy with what you are using now why change.

Thank you - I will stick with Norton, as it is free.  The only problem is that my Inbox keeps getting bombarded with emails from TalkTalk asking me to download Supersafe, although I have Unsubscribed several times!
