I can receive emails on both devices.
Neither will send an email .
I have checked the settings following your guidance online and followed it till I am blue in the face but both devices produce messages saying that " couldn't connect to server (javax.net.ssl.SSLProtocolExceptionSL handshake aborted - error 140770FCSL routines etc.
Is your webpage on this subject accurate?

By the way I didn't put those stupid emoticons in my text - they have appeared where I put two upper case letter S
there is a limit to the size of an email, but you can use something such as Sky drive or Google drive.
You can upload the content to sky drive, You can then send a link via email to the content you want to share.
I use this method for all my large files.

Yes, as I said in my original post I have followed the online guidance ( as given in your link).
Just tried it again to see if any joy. I am getting the same "couldn't finish " message followed by a very long description of the protocol exception.
In case it might be router issue, I have tried on wifi and on data connection and get the same refusal to connect.
Incoming emails can be received with no problem.
This is very frustrating.
PS the blank post from me above was sent with text from my tablet - so some sort of connection is being made.
Thanks for replying but I am no further forward. Some of the threads from your link assume that the Nexus has a 2G or 3G connection - mine is wifi only.
I would reiterate that this problem exists on my phone and on my tablet.
The set up for outgoing emails on both devices finishes with " validating smtp settings " then "can't safely connect to server" then "couldn't open connection to server " and a very large error message. Given that both devices are producing the same outcome it seems reasonable to assume that the advertised settings are somewhat unreliable.
I am reluctant to go through the strife of changing ISP but this together with BT's free football are pushing me in that direction.

Chris , yes I have a TT.net account.
I have been trying to use the settings exactly as in the online guide - port 587 etc.
The settings sometimes default to security type "none" and ports 25 or 465 without any input from me.
Chris , through TT router or via data link through TT ( including the tablet which is occasionally tethered to the android phone)
I take it you can send via Webmail?
If you can please send me the email address/es you are trying from and the make and model of the devices along with the full error messages via Private Message.
If possible please also provide times and dates when you tried to send.
just tried Gmail for the first time ( don't use it generally) it works.
My phone is a ZTE Blade 3 and as per the subject of my post I use a Nexus 7 .
If I try to send an email via TT , I get " Authentication methods aren't supported by server".
I have already given some information about the error code that I get when trying to enter the settings for outgoing TT emails.

I have no record of my attempts to send emails. Most of the trials have been emails to myself to see if I can get a working service.
PS again - I see that I am getting emoticons sometimes when I enter " SS " !!!!!!! - so there is a letter "s" replaced by an emoticon which I have not selected.

In the meantime the settings are
Security type SSL/TLS (Accept all certificates)
Password as set by me
OK I tried webmail . That doesn't work.
Looked online and found this advice

If that is correct , and why should it be , it's a poor state of affairs and in any case I can't connect even when I'm connected at home.
that information is correct, however, if you can't send in Webmail that isn't your issue.
If you can't send in webmail there is a problem with your mail account itself and I need to raise a fault ticket for you.
To do that I need you to send me a private message containing your email address and password that you're having problems with. Please do not post this on the forum.
