Slow internet

My usual speed is around 31, but I sometimes get the BBC iPlayer freezing; I also sometimes get a message when using Zoom saying 'your internet is unstable' or similar, then freezes off and on.  Is there a problem with my router or will a wi-fi extender kit that boost signal help.  I've tried all the Talktalk tests and am told there's nothing wrong.  The router is several years old.  I've been looking for a replacement router, but it is difficult to find the correct type.  Any ideas? Thanks.
