Mental Health Day 2020

Mental health is just like physical health: everybody has it and it’s important to take care of it. We all need to check in on our mental wellbeing from time to time, whether we have mental ill health or not.

World Mental Health Day was first established in 1992 by the World Federation for Mental Health to raise public awareness and create lasting change within mental health care. This year’s Mental Health Day falls on Saturday 10th October and the theme is mental health for all; it comes at a time when our daily lives have changed considerably because of COVID-19 so Mental Health Day 2020 may be the most important one yet.

As the world struggles with the unprecedented impact of Coronavirus, many are experiencing heightened feelings of anxiety, fear, isolation and emotional distress. Mental health charity Mind are encouraging everyone to come together to mark Mental Health Day this year and to try and do one thing for better mental health. Here are some of their tips to help us take care of our mental wellbeing:

  • Find ways to relax – If there's something that helps you de-stress, try to find time to fit it into your day. For example, going for a walk or meditating.
  • Connect with others - Connecting with others can give us a sense of belonging and reduce feelings of loneliness. This has never been more important than in times of social distancing.
  • Spend time in nature – Being outdoors or bringing nature indoors can help improve your mood and decrease stress.
  • Look after your physical health – Drinking enough water, eating a balanced diet and staying active can help your mood and energy levels.
  • Try something creative – Learning a new skill or getting creative can help distract you from difficult thoughts or feelings, or help you to process them.

The past few months have brought many challenges, with Mind’s latest research revealing that more than 60% of adults and over two thirds of young people felt their mental health deteriorated during the pandemic and lockdown. So, however you choose to spend Mental Health Day this year, remember to make time for self-care as well as checking in on those around you.
