TalkTalk asking for equipment to be returned or face a charge of £50

I have recently come to the end of my contract with TalkTalk and move to an alternative/better provide, YouFibre.

I have now received a letter today asking me to return my old TalkTalk equipment or face a charge of £50 if I do not. However when going into this original contract with TalkTalk the terms and conditions stated that the provided Eero router would be free to keep once the contract ended. This was also a point that the sales represented made a big deal about when trying to sign me up.

My new service also runs on an Eero mess setup and my intention was to use this original router as an extender access point.

Can someone from TalkTalk confirm that I can indeed keep this device and that I will not be charged £50 as implied in the received letter?

Regards.

On that basis I guess you could continue to argue that you can keep it if you wish. But as it won't work on any ISP other than TalkTalk there seems little point?

Regardless of FAQs or whether the device is going to be disabled to prevent making use of it, the sales persons statement and contract stated that the equipment would be free to keep at the end of the contract. Issuing a letter to advise that I will be charged £50 is disingenuous to say the least. I suppose yet another reason why it made sense to take my business to an alternative provider.

Hi,

It was, I believe free to use during the contract period, not for life.

Also the router will at some stage fail once off the TalkTalk network as it is locked to the network. TalkTalk and / or Amazon do a check every so often and turn non compliant routers off.

People who have bought such routers off eBay for example have found this to be the case.

It's best to return this as requested to avoid issues.

There's no point in keeping the eero unless you plan on returning to TalkTalk to use the eero on an eero enabled package.  The terms of use of the eero supplied free by TalkTalk is that the eero is for use only on the TalkTalk network and with eero enabled packages.

Arne-TalkTalk replied to a similar topic here.

TalkTalk's standard T&C's do state that when the customer completes the full initial contract term then the supplied router is owned by the customer.  So if the customer is not beyond the end of the full initial contract term then the ownership has not transferred and TalkTalk will require the router to be returned or will apply the non-return charge.

But given that the free-issue TalkTalk eero 6 is restricted to use on the TalkTalk Network there's no point in keeping it in my opinion. I returned the free-issue TalkTalk eero 6 routers for my Full Fibre service when I moved home even though I was out of contract. TalkTalk will send you a postage paid returns bag to make recycling easier.
