Next generation text relay service

If you're deaf, hard of hearing or speech-impaired the Next Generation Text Service or NGT can help you communicate with anyone over the phone, using the text relay service via the NGT Lite app. You can use the app on your mobile, tablet or PC. If you’re looking for information about the original Text Relay Service, check out using the Test Relay Service.

You can download the NGT Lite app for your device by selecting one of the following, please note another window will open and you’ll be taken to the relevant website or app store to download the app on your device:

You can download the latest version of the app for your computer on the HGTS website for Windows, Apple Mac or Linux. For more information about setting up your app and linking our phone number check out How to use NGT.

  1. Open the app on your device and check that you’re connected to the internet, you should see a green icon at the top of the screen
  2. Switch to making a call and dial 18001 followed by the phone number
  3. Go back to the app and select the 'Join' button to join the call
  4. When the person you’re calling answers, the Relay Assistant will introduce the call and explain how it works

 

  1. Open the app on your device and check that you’re connected to the internet, you should see a green icon at the top of the screen
  2. Dial 18000 on your phone
  3. Go back to the app and select the 'Join' button to join the call
  4. Tell the Relay Assistant which emergency service you need to be connected to a 999 operator

 

A bit less than you might think. TalkTalk gives you a 30% discount on direct-dialled Text Relay calls (calls to and from a Text Relay service user) if they're not included in your package.

This will show on two lines, the first shows the code called 18001/18002 as free of charge and the second, the cost of the local call with the 30% discount applied.
