Using eero's advanced features

TalkTalk are at the forefront of providing ideal home internet solutions for its customers. We believe Amazon's eero products are one of the best home internet solutions on the market, which is why we offer them as part of our Full Fibre plans. Whether you're new to eero technology or you've been a user for some time, we're here to provide you with some advanced tips which you could use to improve the performance of your home network.

You might find that the Ethernet cable supplied with your eero(s) may not allow for ideal placement of your router, depending on how far you’re placing it from your modem. Category 5E (Cat5E) Ethernet cables (such as the one supplied) are available in longer lengths. A longer cable will allow you to place your hub in a more centralized location while avoiding larger objects, to ensure the signal reaches throughout your home.

It is also possible to upgrade to a Category 6 (Cat6) or Category 7 (Cat7) cable (not supplied). These cables are more suitable for handling the higher speeds of our Future Fibre packages, and you might achieve improved Wi-Fi performance with their use. Older cables (Category 5 and before) may not support the higher speeds available on your service (100 Mb/s and higher), so ensure you use the Cat5E cable supplied if you're not upgrading your cable.

Whether you’re using a Cat5E, Cat6, or Cat7 cable, each use the same standard connector.

How to Replace the Ethernet cable

  1. Unplug the Ethernet cable from both the eero and any other device it is plugged into (e.g. your Fibre Connection Box, television)
  2. Plug the new Ethernet cable into the same ports as your previous cable.
  3. If there is no connectivity between your devices after replacing the cable, reset your equipment and wait a few minutes for connectivity to be restored.

Once you’ve finished setting everything up, your eero may have a spare Ethernet port on the back (unless you’ve also installed a Digital Voice Adapter). This will allow you to connect another device directly to your router with an additional Ethernet cable (not supplied). You can of course connect most devices to your router via Wi-Fi. However, connecting via a wired connection will give you the most stable connection at higher speeds. If your device doesn’t have an in-built Ethernet port, an Ethernet Adapter will allow you to connect your device through USB instead.

Need to connect multiple devices to a wired network? Investing in a network switch will allow you to connect several devices to your router via a wired connection, ensuring that every device is provided a seamless high-speed connection. You can use any network switch you like, but we’d recommend a gigabit network switch, which can handle speeds of up to 1000 Mbps.

A Wi-Fi mesh network is a system composed of multiple mesh nodes (referred to as points, mesh extenders, or satellites) that work together as one large home WiFi system. A Mesh network is designed to blanket your entire home with consistent and strong Wi-Fi coverage. On our Fibre 900 plan, you can use multiple eeros to create a network that shares your Wi-Fi signal within a larger area, to ensure coverage throughout your home at the optimum speeds. This signal can also cope with the heavy demands of multiple devices sharing the network, especially while video calling, streaming, or playing video games online.

Setting up a Mesh network

  1. Select the blue plus button next to your Wi-Fi network's name
  2. Select Add or Replace eero Devices
  3. Plug in your new eero and switch it on.
  4. Select Add eero Device and then follow the on-screen instructions. The app should begin searching for your new eero device, and the light on your main eero should turn blue and begin flashing. Once the light stops flashing and turns from blue to white, you've successfully connected! The app will tell you when you can turn off your new eero and reposition it in the best place
  5. If your eero app can't find the new device, it may come up with a 'No eero device found' screen. If so, move the new eero closer and select Try again, or alternatively, select Set Up Using a Serial Number and manually type in the product's serial number

Once you've finished setting up, your eeros should be placed separate from each other to achieve optimum performance. Each eero should be placed ideally halfway up the wall on an open, flat surface (such as a shelf or the top of a unit) with nothing blocking them from the sides or back (such as inside a cabinet or cupboard). You should have a minimum of 10 feet / 3 metres between each eero, up to a maximum of 50 feet / 15 metres, and ensure they're kept away from other electronic devices. Your eeros can be placed on different floors of your home, or with multiple rooms between them. The only necessity is that they’re close enough to be able to maintain the network, while being far enough apart to provide ideal coverage throughout your home. Experiment with positioning your eeros in different rooms and at different elevations to achieve the optimum coverage throughout your home.

Alternatively, you might find it helpful to use a network analyser app to provide detailed information on signal strength throughout your home. Changing the location of your eero and then measuring the speed changes will give you an accurate picture of how your speed changes as you change the location of your eero.

Thread is a low-power, wireless mesh standard operating method. If Thread is turned on, eero will create a network for Thread devices to connect to. Devices with Thread are usually low-power Smart appliances such as lights, temperature controls, entertainment centres, and security systems, which then become an integrated network of devices which you can control wirelessly.

Enabling and disabling Thread

  1. On the main app screen, select Settings at the bottom of the page
  2. Next, select Network Settings
  3. Select Thread
  4. Select the switch to activate/deactivate Thread
  5. Press the back arrow to confirm your changes

Client steering is a setting that automatically pairs your device to the optimal eero as you move around your home. This setting is used when you have multiple eeros (for example, on our Fibre 900 plan), and allows you to maintain a steady Wi-Fi signal as you move closer to or further away from each eero in your home.

Enabling and disabling Client Steering

  1. On the main app screen, select Settings at the bottom of the page
  2. Next, select Network Settings
  3. Select Client steering
  4. Select the switch on the right to activate/deactivate Client steering
  5. Press the arrow button at the top of the screen to confirm your changes

Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) is a networking standard that allows many devices to exist simultaneously on the internet and can make the internet faster and more secure. We recommend leaving this setting switched on, but if you do need to turn this setting off for any reason, follow the instructions below

Enabling and disabling ipv6

  1. Select Settings on the app home screen
  2. Next, select Network Settings
  3. Select IPv6
  4. Select the switch to activate or deactivate IPv6
  5. Press the back arrow to confirm your changes
