Using 3rd Party DNS

DNS (Domain Name Service) translates the web address you type in a web browser into an IP address. This is to identify the website you’re visiting.

Why do I need DNS?

Basically, words and letters are easier for us to remember than lots of numbers. Just imagine you had to type 216.58.198.99 every time you wanted to visit Google, then having to remember a different set of numbers for every other website!

What DNS should I use?

We recommend you use TalkTalk DNS. If you do this, you’ll benefit from all the great features offered by our HomeSafe service.

How do I get the TalkTalk DNS?

Your TalkTalk router comes set up with the TalkTalk DNS so, unless you change these settings, that’s what you’ll be using. Just remember, if you’ve changed any DNS settings on any computer or device you use, you'll have to change them back to benefit from our TalkTalk HomeSafe service.

Here's how to change the DNS settings in your Wi-Fi Hub Black:

  1. Open your web browser, type http://192.168.1.1 into the address bar and press Enter

Yes, you can use another DNS if you’d like to, but remember, this means any HomeSafe settings you have won’t work anymore. This includes Virus Alerts, Kid Safe filtering and Homework Time.

Not using a TalkTalk router?

If you're not using a TalkTalk router and you want to make sure you're using the TalkTalk DNS settings, you'll need to look at your instructions on how to change them. The DNS servers are;
