Setting up and positioning your Wi-Fi Booster

We hope your new Wi-Fi Booster arrived safe and sound and you're excited to get set up! We've provided everything you need below to help you get up and running as quickly as possible. First, check out the setting up section to get you started (Or the Setting up V2 section if you've got our newest Wi-Fi Booster). Next, find out how to position your Wi-Fi Booster to achieve the best performance. If you're seeing something not covered in the setup instructions, our lights guide covers the common light combinations you might see during setup or once you've finished setting up. Finally, if you're seeing something on your Booster that isn't covered in this article, our Troubleshooting guide will cover any remaining concerns you might experience while using the Wi-Fi Booster.

It's best to initially connect the Wi-Fi Booster with your Wi-Fi Hub in the same room. That way, you can be sure they are paired correctly before finding the right spot for the Booster.

Step 1

Connect the power supply to the Wi-Fi Booster, plug it into a mains socket and switch on. The left LED (indicating power) will turn white. Wait for one minute until the central LED flashes red.

Step 2

On your Wi-Fi Hub, press and hold the circular WPS button  on the back for 3 seconds, then let go. The LED will flash orange.

Step 3

Go back to the Wi-Fi Booster and briefly press the circular WPS button on the left hand side. This will connect the two devices together. It usually takes about 30 seconds. During this time, you will see the central LED flash green. When that LED changes to solid green, they are connected.

Step 4

When the devices are paired, your Wi-Fi Hub will show a white LED and the Wi-Fi Booster will show three lights: white (power on), green (signal strength) and white (Wi-Fi connected).
If you're setting your Booster up for the first time, it will likely perform an update — you should see all three LED lights flashing if this is the case. We recommend not performing any further steps until the lights have stopped flashing.

Step 5

Now you can power off, unplug the Wi-Fi Booster and move it to where it will provide the best coverage.

If you've encountered a different light pattern than described earlier in this article, we've got you covered. We'll go over some of the common light combinations below, but if you're experiencing anything different, take a look at our Troubleshooting guide to help diagnose the problem.

The Wi-Fi Booster V1 has three lights on it:

  • A white 'Power' LED light
  • A tricolour 'Signal' LED that displays the quality of link between any other hubs or extenders in your network
  • A white 'Wi-Fi' LED light
The table below shows you what each light combination means once the device has been switched on.

Positioning your Wi-Fi Booster

We hope you've now completed setting up your Wi-Fi Booster. Next, we'll talk about positioning the Booster — we've got some initial tips to help you find the ideal place for it in your home.

  • Placement is everything – Putting your Wi-Fi Booster too close to your main router won't yield any benefit, but place too far apart and they won't be able to communicate effectively. We recommend a distance of 10-50 feet / 3-15 metres between your Wi-Fi Hub and your Wi-Fi Booster.
  • You'll want your Wi-Fi Booster to be in a place with as few obstructions as possible. The Booster will spread your Wi-Fi signal further once connected, but you'll still have to be mindful of places with thicker (e.g. exterior) walls, large appliances, or furniture when deciding where to place your Booster.
  • Have a few preliminary locations in mind before you begin moving your Booster around. You might find that the first location you had in mind has an unexpected blockage to your signal, or it might be placed somewhere that doesn't provide optimum coverage throughout your home.

Once you've got an ideal location or two in mind, the steps below will tell you how to move your Wi-Fi Booster.

Step 1

Find an ideal position halfway between your existing Wi-Fi Hub and your ‘blank spot’ (the area of poor Wi-Fi coverage). It’ll need to be near a mains socket.

Step 2

Connect the power supply to your Wi-Fi Booster, plug it into a wall socket and switch on. The left LED (indicating power) will turn white.

Step 3

All done! After a minute or two, the Wi-Fi Booster will show three lights: white (power on), green or orange (signal strength), white (Wi-Fi connected). If your signal strength light shows in orange or red, you may need to place the Booster closer to your hub, or in a place with fewer obstructions to achieve the best performance.

If you're seeing something different to what's described above once connected, we have a Troubleshooting guide for some common behaviours your Wi-Fi Booster may showing during setup and while using the product.
