There are three stages to your overall speed:-

  1. The speed from the fibre or old broadband to your router is dictated by you guaranteed download speed of your package.
  2. The speed from a device to the router, or the Link speed. If connected by Ethernet cable this could be up to 1Gbps, if wireless this will depend on your Wi-Fi network card specification, the signal strength received from the router & the amount of Wi-Fi interference.
  3. A speed test is a test from your device to the internet and this will be limited by the slower of 1 or 2 above. As an example, if step 1 was 80Mbps and step 2 was 867Mbps, your speed test should be a bit less than 80Mbps.

Your problems would seem to be 2 above.

What make/model of router do you have and how is the device connected to it, Ethernet cable or wireless?

Keith
