Microsoft post notifications of end of life for its products. Extended support for Vista ended in 2017 as did support for WLM. TalkTalk has been posting advice and sending out mail notifications to users requiring secure mail settings to be used. This has been happening for some years now. Last year in August / September more notifications went out about only using secure settings.

If you were using insecure settings and then updated those in WLM to use secure settings it's fair to say that you may have been unaware that the security offered by WLM was also outdated. But when TalkTalk eliminated outdated security from its Mail service on 3rd March 2022 then the only way of getting WLM to work was by reverting to no security. It was seriously short-sighted of TalkTalk to allow connections using no security.

However, that is now changing because TalkTalk is forcing users to either use secure webmail or secure email clients / apps that support as a minimum TLS 1.2 connection security. This is being done by detecting which users continue to ignore TalkTalk guidance to use secure mail and for those users switching off the ability to use any other method of connecting to the mailbox other than via webmail.

So that's the background. Let me know which device / operating system / email software you choose and I'll be here to help ensure the email software is correctly set up.

OK so it looks like I need to bin my computer and use a newer device. Surprised talk talk did not let me know they were changing the settings though. I can't use webmail on that device either it just shows a blank mailbox but I can see it on a tablet that I have use of.

Thanks for your help, I think I need to bite the bullet and buy a newer device for my emails.

Thanks again

Regards Mark.

OK, so you have an old computer running an outdated Vista OS and an outdated email client Windows Live Mail (WLM). Every time you take that computer online you're running real security risks.

The reason your mail is working on the old insecure settings of WLM is that WLM does not support the secure mail required for TalkTalk Mail. Which is why WLM didn't work using the only outdated secure options that WLM has.

TalkTalk are disabling mailboxes that are having connections made by insecure settings. So, what will happen is that your mailbox will be limited to webmail only access. Webmail is secure by design when using an up to date supported browser like Chrome, Edge or Firefox but not Internet Explorer.

What other devices do you have?  What are your plans for using TalkTalk Mail securely?

Reverted back to original settings for the receiving emails and it is now working.

POP3.homecall.co.uk on port 110 with no Ssl.

My computer is my old desktop which I use predominantly for email and website work

I think it is Vista OS with Windows mail that came with it.

So what is your email software and what is the device operating system?  Reverting to the original homecall settings is most definitely not advisable.

Thanks again for your prompt response. My screen looks nothing like the one you showed me.  But I changed the settings as you advised and did a test send email and a test receive email from another device.  The sent email now works but I get an error message for receiving emails now.  Will change the receiving emails back to original settings and see what happens.

Have a look at the Sync options shown below.

You're still using legacy homecall domain settings and need to manually update those to the talktalk.net host name servers. When you've done that for Windows Mail exactly as shown below including making sure all four tick boxes are ticked then let us know the outcome.

Thanks for your prompt response.

My incoming mail server is POP3.homecall.co.uk which is OK

My outgoing mail is smtp.homecall.co.uk which is not working. It does not work on port 25 or 587

The Windows Mail on Windows 10 or 11 Sync options for an IMAP email account are:

Windows Mail IMAP server settings for TalkTalk Mail

If you don't recognise the image then please explain in a bit more detail what you mean by Microsoft Mail. Should you have set up a POP3 mail account in Windows Mail then the Incoming email server is: mail.talktalk.net:995:1
