I'm thinking of buying a new ADSL router.  Will I need a password and ID to connect the router to the internet ?  Not the password and ID on the router that's use to connect the computer to the router.

You don't need to set the password, but you may need to set the username, depending on what service you have. See: Set up a non-TalkTalk router.
