TalkTalk Setting for email.... yet another for Ady-TalkTalk I guess

Morning,

As others have had, I've swapped the mailbox setting to the ones linked here https://community.talktalk.co.uk/t5/Email/Correct-Email-Settings-and-Communications/td-p/2908247

However, it times out sometimes or gives an incorrect password warning even though it works fine on the webmail.

I'm assuming its to do with the current mailbox switch over, but was hoping to get access restored with the new settings!

Help greatly received

Hi DS, I've added your mailbox to those to be restored to normal function. Please allow 48 hours for the change to complete.

Thank you Gondola for all of your help.

By that response, it sounds like I need to have a word with my Son who installed the Office in the first place! I'll uninstall it now.

Hope you have a great rest of your day!

The secure mail settings on Thunderbird are good so I've requested that full access is restored for the email address mailbox in your Community profile Private notes. NB Thunderbird will not authenticate the access until TalkTalk switch the connection back on.

TalkTalk Support will respond here and access returned within a couple of days after that. Until then use TalkTalk Mail webmail via an up to date Internet browser to keep in touch with email contacts.

Please don't take the Outlook product online because what you showed you were using was definitely not Outlook 2016.

That suggests it is in fact 2016, but I have just downloaded the latest version of Thunderbird at it is also not working on that!

I'm running Windows 10 if that makes any difference?!

That shows you what's installed. But it may be a trial copy only for Office / Outlook 2016. To see what the Outlook software version is that you're using, you open that software and select Help and Product Information. Which version of Outlook do I have?

How bizarre it says Outlook 2016 but having looked online at pictures you are right it doesn't look the same at all!

Ok I'll try Thunderbird soon!

Thank you for all your help today!

What you're overlooking is that the software is not Outlook 2016.

The software may well support TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 but both of these protocols are deprecated and hackable. If the Outlook software does not support TLS 1.2 and StartTLS commands then it needs upgrading.

The upgrade path is Outlook 365 as a paid upgrade (minimum recommended is Outlook 2016) if your Operating System supports that or Windows Mail as part of the package of Windows 10 and 11 or use alternative email software like Thunderbird of BlueMail desktop email.

Sorry I'm probably overlooking something simple, but I'm fairly sure I've done as the picture shows and it's still giving me a server error

With the encryption I can choose - None, SSL, TLS, Auto but no combination of them seem to work corectly

The TalkTalk advice is fundamentally correect but software setups may need a bit of additional guidance to get them working.

Outlook 16 supports secure mail and to update go via the Advanced setup settings of an email profile, as in this example for Windows 10 or 11.

  • Select the  Windows icon bottom left
  • Select the  Settings cog icon
  • Select Accounts
  • Select  Email & Accounts and for a first time setup select Add Account and enter the settings in the table
  • Or select the email account
  • Select Change account or double click on the email account

At that point on your device you ought to see the Outlook setup to enter the TalkTalk Mail server settings: NB All talktalk domains use the exact same secure settings.

Supported Outlook 16 settings are:

Account Type  IMAP secure
Username Full TalkTalk email address
Password TalkTalk email password
Incoming mail server mail.talktalk.net
Incoming Port (IMAP) 993
Incoming Connection Security SSL/TLS
Outgoing mail server smtp.talktalk.net
Outgoing Port 587
Outgoing Connection Security STARTTLS
My Outgoing Server Requires Authentication Yes
Authentication Method Normal Password (Not SPA)

However, the account will not authenticate a connection until TalkTalk restore full access.

Outlook 2016,

Sorry I thought they both incoming and outgoing should be TLS as per the post but obviously not?!

The encrypted connection settings in Outlook aren't correct.

What version of Outlook is it?

If you saw the message from TalkTalk advising "Our records show that you are still accessing your email using unencrypted email settings, because of this you will no longer be able to receive or send emails via this email app or software" then the email address receiving that notification has been limited to webmail only access as a last resort action by TalkTalk to stop the use of insecure email.

TalkTalk Mail webmail is secure by design using an up to date Internet browser.

Select here: Sign in to TalkTalk Mail

Enter your full TalkTalk Mail email address and password, select Sign in.

You will be able to get email access restored to email apps or software including mail collection services, passwords will then re-authenticate, so long as you're ready to use up to date and secure email settings for all the ways you view emails. We can advise on device and software compatibility and provide customer setup guides. Just let us know each mail collection service, each device, its operating system and email software including version that are in current use.

What device are you using, what is its operating system and with what software? We would like to help ensure that the device is capable of secure mail and that you do have the right settings for that software.

For a definitive check of settings take screenshots of the incoming and outgoing server settings, image edit to obscure the first part of the email address and upload here using the Camera icon (desktop browser) or Picture icon (mobile browser) above this reply area.

When you confirm the secure settings are ready I can request TalkTalk Support to restore full access. TalkTalk Support will respond here and access will be restored usually within a couple of working days.

Prepare for TalkTalk Support - include in the Community Profile (not in these public posts):

Email account holder name

Scroll down to Private notes to add the email address(es)
and TalkTalk or MailPlus customer account number

Check and Save changes

Select here: Update your profile
