Received TT message ref resetting and have done what was suggested but still cannot send emails from both TT email accounts on my laptop using Thunderbird. I can receive emails on the laptop and my tablet, although on the tablet no attachments/photos are received. I have persevered since 23rd Feb  but now realise TT is blocking me. I am not a technical member so may I ask please that any replies are simple. Thank you

Hi Tess1, the mailbox is fully functional. The only other reason for not being able to send is that we've blocked sending from port 25. We're forcing blocks on unsecure sending.

We'll see what TalkTalk say. But if you're receiving mail to the same address as you're trying to send from then the mailbox access is not blocked.

Gondola no the port setting is not set at 25 but the correct one as both you and TT advise . My husband has reset all and double checked and everything is showing exactly as it should be. The only thing left is there must be something being blocked by talktalk.

You said you were receiving mail so if that's mail incoming to the same email account in Thunderbird that you're not able to send from then the account is not blocked. Sending might be blocked if your outgoing mail from Thunderbird is sent using port 25.

The server refusing to connect is usually because the outgoing port is set to port 25.

Gondola I have no idea how to take a screen shot, sorry but ancient oldie. The settings have been checked and rechecked and are exactly as you state, outgoing server still refuses to connect. I'm wondering if Talktalk has blocked my account as seems to be the only remaining possibility.

What's the sending error message?

If you take a screenshot of the outgoing SMTP server settings I'll check them for you. Image edit the screenshot to obscure the first part of your email address / UserName before posting here (broadband connection permitting) using the Camera icon above this Reply area.

Thanks Gondola , hubby says we have done what you have suggested but still cannot send emails from the laptop. Strangely today I cannot repost posts on Facebook as it says no connection, probably nothing to do with email problem but since 23rd Feb everything seems to have been affected.

Probably the settings on Thunderbird aren't quite right.

In the meantime you have access via webmail and an up to date Internet browser.

Select here: Sign in to TalkTalk Mail

Enter your full TalkTalk Mail email address and password, select Sign in.

On updating the Thunderbird email software Server Settings (incoming mail) and outgoing SMTP server settings, for any active mailbox that does have IMAP / POP3 access, you'll possibly be asked to accept a new certificate (yes, accept) and to enter the email password when using Thunderbird to read or write emails so have the current password ready (when you've set a new password). Tick to remember or save the password before entering it. Each email address needs to have it's own settings and its own outgoing SMTP server because outgoing authentication requires the email account User Name and Password.

User Name is the full email address and Password is the email password.

  • Start Thunderbird
  • Select the Thunderbird triple line menu top right
  • Select Account Settings from the menu
  • Select Server Settings under the email account name in the left side panel
  • Use the entries as shown in the table
  • Look down the left side panel to Outgoing Server SMTP
  • Select Edit to update the Outgoing server settings as per the lower entries in the table below - remember to select the correct Outgoing Server for the correct email account.

Thunderbird email client settings for all TalkTalk Mail domains including talktalk, tiscali and their sister email addresses are:

Account Type  IMAP secure Email Account
User Name Full email address
Password Email password
Incoming mail server (IMAP) mail.talktalk.net
Incoming Port 993 (see note below)
Incoming Connection Security SSL/TLS
Authentication Method Normal Password
Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.talktalk.net
Outgoing Port 587
Outgoing Connection Security STARTTLS
Authentication Method Normal Password

Note: If you use POP3 then the only difference is in the incoming mail server port that is 995 for POP3 secure.
