Unable to send replies to emails on my iMac but can send replies on my iPad. The settings on my my imac haven;'t been changed by me , yet the outgoing emails setting is permanently on offline. I have restarted the application on my imac but it switched back in seconds

Please advise

If you see IMAP, you’re completely safe to remove and re‑add the account.

If you see POP, please let me know before removing it so I can guide you further.

@Davebn3

If your TalkTalk email account is set up in the Mail app using IMAP (which is the standard and recommended setup), then:

No — you will not lose your email folders or saved emails.

IMAP stores all your emails and folders on the TalkTalk server, not on the device.
Removing the account from your iMac simply removes the connection — not the actual emails.

When you add the account back in, the Mail app will:

  • reconnect to the TalkTalk server
  • re‑sync all your folders and emails
  • restore everything exactly as it appears in Webmail

⚠️ Only exception

If the account was set up using POP (older method), then emails may have been downloaded and stored locally on the iMac.
Most users are on IMAP, but it’s worth checking.

👉 To check if you’re using IMAP or POP:

On your iMac Mail app:

  1. Open Mail
  2. Click Mail (top left) → Settings
  3. Select Accounts
  4. Choose your TalkTalk email
  5. Look for Account Type: IMAP or POP

If I remove the account from the mail app, will I lose all my email folders and saved emails?

Since Mail app is still showing the outgoing server as Offline, removing the TalkTalk account from the Mail app and adding it again usually refreshes the connection.

@Davebn3

Thanks for checking that for us. Since Webmail is working fine, the issue is isolated to the Mail app on your iMac. When the outgoing server shows as Offline, it usually means the app is unable to connect to the TalkTalk SMTP server.

As it’s not a TalkTalk platform, we’re unable to run any diagnostics or checks on the Mail app itself, but we can guide you through the settings that usually resolve this type of problem.

It seems to work on webmail . It is just the mail app it isn't working on. I can send replies on my iPad

Yes @Davebn3, can you try accessing your emails through Webmail and let us know if you are still experiencing the same issue.

Hi @Davebn3 I'm sorry to hear this, please confirm if you are using TalkTalk webmail or a 3rd party to access your emails.
