Since I received an email from TT some days ago warning me about a security problem, along with  a fix which involves changing a port from 143 to 587. I have no longer been able to access my Thunderbird email client (not webmail bye the way) at all!

Can anyone assist please?

regards,

boydell.

Hi boydell

I gave you a step by step way to check your email settings in Thunderbird. Message 2 in this topic. And asked you to offer screenshots of your Server Settings and Outgoing SMTP server settings. Message 5 in this topic.

If you were to setup a new email account in Thunderbird using the Manual setup process these are the settings you need to proceed with. You'll find that Thunderbird automatically sets up some settings imperfectly so the following will need to be manually corrected:

  • Hostname for the Incoming Server: mail.talktalk.net
  • Port for the Incoming Server: 993 (for IMAP secure) 995 (for POP3 secure)
  • Username for both Incoming and Outgoing servers must be your full TalkTalk email address

Thunderbird IMAP Server settings

I trust that helps you to confirm for Ady that you do have the correct settings ready. NB if Thunderbird cannot connect to the mailbox because IMAP / POP3 access is switched off then the password will not be authenticated. So all we need you to do is confirm you have set up Thunderbird in readiness for full access to be switched on.

A copy of what @boydell just sent me by PM.

"my email thunderbird client still not working!

Can TalkTalk please send me the very latest setup step by step details please?

I am on talktalk and windows 10, and also have a padlock icon on my account/inbox."

@boydell, you need to stick with the support you have been getting from @Gondola and @Ady-TalkTalk.

I am not qualified to advise you about this matter  - just another customer like yourself!

Have you updated the outgoing SMTP server settings to those I showed in the table? If still using port 25 then that will not work.

Take a screenshot of the outgoing server settings in Thunderbird, image edit to obscure the first part of your email address and upload here using the camera icon above this Reply area. Do not start a new topic, just reply right here please.

Have the current email problems been resolved at the TalkTalk end yet?

Or am I banging my head against a brick wall (having spent many hours) trying to get my email client (Thunderbird) to send mail?

regards,

boydell.

The incoming port number is changed from 143 to 993 and the outgoing port number changed from 25 to 587 all as shown in the table below.

In the meantime you have access via webmail and an up to date Internet browser.

Select here: Sign in to TalkTalk Mail

Enter your full TalkTalk Mail email address and password, select Sign in.

On updating the Thunderbird email software Server Settings (incoming mail) and outgoing SMTP server settings, for any active mailbox that does have IMAP / POP3 access, you'll possibly be asked to accept a new certificate (yes, accept) and to enter the email password when using Thunderbird to read or write emails so have the current password ready (when you've set a new password). Tick to remember or save the password before entering it. Each email address needs to have it's own settings and its own outgoing SMTP server because outgoing authentication requires the email account User Name and Password.

User Name is the full email address and Password is the email password.

  • Start Thunderbird
  • Select the Thunderbird triple line menu top right
  • Select Account Settings from the menu
  • Select Server Settings under the email account name in the left side panel
  • Use the entries as shown in the table
  • Look down the left side panel to Outgoing Server SMTP
  • Select Edit to update the Outgoing server settings as per the lower entries in the table below - remember to select the correct Outgoing Server for the correct email account.

Thunderbird email client settings for all TalkTalk Mail domains including talktalk, tiscali and their sister email addresses are:

Account Type  IMAP secure Email Account
User Name Full email address
Password Email password
Incoming mail server (IMAP) mail.talktalk.net
Incoming Port 993
Incoming Connection Security SSL/TLS
Authentication Method Normal Password
Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.talktalk.net
Outgoing Port 587
Outgoing Connection Security STARTTLS
Authentication Method Normal Password
