Connected to new network message.

Hello,

I've just had my third 'you are connected to a new network' message. It says that I am connected to something called Qualcomm. I clicked on my Internet access icon in the bottom right hand corner of my screen, I'm using windows 8.1, the blue panel appeared on the right of the screen. At the top it just said 'ethernet connection', it should say 'TalkTalk ethernet'. Prior to this message my connection momentarily fails and then I'm told that I'm connected to a new network. When I check my 'Networks' folder it does say TalkTalk, but not in in the blue panel. This switch only lasts a few seconds before reverting to TalkTalk ethernet. However I'm very concerned. If anyone here knows what the hell is going on I would be most grateful if they would enlighten me. Thank you.

Hello,

I've run a test on the line now which hasn't detected a fault and the connection looks stable. Does this also happen if you connect wired?

Thanks

Yep, I agree with @martswain, there is probably nothing malicious going on here, but the fact that your computer is occasionally losing its connection with the router and then reporting this different network name might be an indication that there is a fault somewhere. So best to see what the support team here suggest when they return tomorrow, if they did suspect the router then they may be able to arrange a replacement, that would at least allow you to see if the router itself is causing the issue.

Do you have any other device that can connect to the router via ethernet, if so do you also see the same drops of connection with that device ?

Thank you martswain, that's good to know. I'm not a techie so stuff I don't understand worries me, I'm no longer worried.

Qualcomm is the BRAND NAME of an enormous semiconductor manufacturer.

The also have branded wireless adapters in zillions of devices, nothing sinister in your device reporting it as being connected to one of them !

Ok cool, thanks. As you have a DSL-3782 then we know it is nothing to do with the recent firmware updates, as that was specific to the much newer Sagemcom routers.

If the support team here thought it might be a sign that your router was starting to fail then they would be able to arrange a replacement router for you, but there may be some other tests they can do first to see if there is another cause.

Thank you Skynet_TX. My router is a DSL-3782 and I use an ethernet connection. I used to turn my wi-fi off but now that I have an Ipad I leave it on. It's interesting to find out what Qualcomm is.

Can you confirm what model of router you have ?

Also can you confirm if this machine is connected via Ethernet or Wi-Fi ?

The reason I ask is that I've seen a handful of people getting some strange behaviour with Ethernet connected devices when using the Sagemcom Wi-Fi Hub, this seems to be something new that is happening since some new firmware was released, so I just wondered if this could be related to the problem you are seeing.

Qualcomm create computer chips etc., so it is quite likely there is hardware manufactured by Qualcomm inside your router, that is likely to be where it is picking that name up from.

For the attention of Michelle: Profile updated.

My thanks to Michelle from the support team and to Skynet_TX for their help. A bit more information and questions.

The warning message comes from my anti-virus Avast. As I mentioned this has happened three times, when the warning appears it gives an option to scan the new connection. On the previous two occasions I didn't bother, I thought that it was just a glitch, a false warning. The third time, yesterday, I did take the scan option. Avast told me that scanning would help identify anyone 'piggybacking' (as they put it) on my wi-fi connection. The scan revealed two devices, I took this to mean my lap-top and my Ipad. Avast also knew the name I had given to my home network, this also concerns me.

Avast didn't say that it had found any external devices but it gave the advice to change my wi-fi password (I didn't), because I thought that my wi-fi is dependent on my main connection from TalkTalk to my router, therefore what difference would changing my wi-fi password make?. In other words your wi-fi is dependent on your network connection, whatever that might be, and once again what difference would changing your wi-fi password make in preventing these network switches from happening?. I'm not a techie so am I right?.

At the end of the Avast scan and below the advice to change your wi-fi password it also gave the option to prevent such things from happening by getting Avast VPN, I didn't. I don't see what difference that would make either because surely you still need a broadband network connection in order to use a VPN?.

I'm confused, a resolution would be very welcome, thank you. Incidentally what is Qualcomm?.

Hello,

Can you please update your community profile to include your:

  • Name
  • Telephone number
  • Alternative contact number

We'll then look into this further. Please do not post this information on this thread. Once you've updated your profile please post in your topic to confirm it's updated.

Thanks

Hi @David104,

What model of router do you have ?

For one of the TalkTalk Support Team on this community to be able to look into this you will need to update your community profile to include your name, landline telephone number that your TalkTalk service is provided on & an alternative contact number. This will allow them to identify you, and they will then be able to help.

Don't post any personal details in this thread, just add them to your community profile (only you and the TalkTalk Support Team on this community can see your profile details).

Then they will hopefully be able to respond to this post tomorrow.
